I got my iPhone 11Pro Max yesterday. I’ll try to take some photos (I’m traveling) but I think the 13mm lens is relatively impressive. I wish there was a horizon line available on the phone, but this could be a lot of fun.

I have an app that can create more blur, fake bokeh. I like the idea of having an f2.8 lens fake out the blur of a 1.4 lens.

Here's a sample, not sure how much difference it makes, but one is straight from A7, the other is with additional fake bokeh

Nice example of the limitations at present. This SW definitely needs improvement. The killing of her flying hairs at the tuft reveal the computational blur and make it unpleasant to me.

Got mine too haven't really messed with it much yet but did get the Profoto C1 plus which is a held held or gorillapod/tripod/stand mount.

Besides all the benefits it solves one of my biggest gripes for smartphones. You can trigger the shutter with the white button on the C1+ with so much more precision and timing and ease than the iPhone.

It is very hard to hold the iPhone as steady as a want to when I am also tying to actuate the shutter button much less know how long it will take for the flash to fire.

It is not inexpensive but if you want do so some nice off camera flash photography it fits in your cargo shorts or girlfriends purse and enables you to create better images when dining, drinking and other.

I feel that has always been a downfall with iPhones is good exposures in the evening you never know what you are going to get it seems and they are never that great.

These threads surprise me; are iPhone users really so unaware of competing devices? What is most surprising is the not the slow advancement of mirrorless but the slow, imitative advancements of iPhones, a once industry-leading product. A triple lens camera is not new, and not being able to outperform cameras in 2 year old competing phones is disappointing.

I love taking photos with my Pixel 2XL...it's the first phone I've had that passes 'acceptable' for small scale photos. I'm able to take decent photos in situations where, in the past, I'd never have a decent camera with me. All phones, even the best, are still terrible at any magnification level, though. So, the fact that I can simply touch my phone to my Sony, have it transfer a full res JPEG and then do with it want is awesome. I don't need to my camera to become my phone; I have my phone to be my phone. I need my camera to be the best camera.

What people forget is if you use Mac computers and an iPad you would be nuts not to buy iPhones.

Everything you do is synced photos contacts calendars etc

I have a Mac, an iPad pro and a Pixel phone and everything is synced across all devices. I owned
every iPhone from the first one to the 6s and my wife and daughter still do. My Pixel is more effective at syncing than either of theirs. What Android phone did you use that didn't work as such?

Haha I was just going to say this. I think the differences, especially with the iPhone 11 Pro adding an ultra wide and some decent AI, are minimal, really down to preference, save a few features. Learning a new OS is a bit like learning to speak a new 'language', so best to stick with what you know, what works. As with cameras, operational proficiency will likely make more shots than anything else. Android has some really key features for me as well as endless customizability. But really, if you stole my phone and gave me an iPhone, I'd be angry for a week, adjust, and likely not think about it.

By most reviews I’ve seen, the iPhone 11 Pro cams are once again industry leading, surpassing even the Pixel. I’m sure this lead won’t last long.

There is also no need to deride those of us that prefer iPhones. There is a laundry list of why I prefer iOS to Android and the camera isn’t even a point of consideration for me.

I'm not deriding people who prefer iPhones, merely pointing out that there seems to be a lack of awareness among their users of competing devices. Evidence would suggest I'm not wrong.

My Pixel is two years old, uses a single camera, a new 11 Pro should be better, full stop. It isn't when it comes to its version of Night Sight, and it's not even available on its front facing cameras. Compared to a P30 Pro, it's pretty even, with victories for each in various categories. I like the colour of the iPhone better, the P30 for detail and the edge accuracy of the 'bokeh' effect. If I am to examine this with the same critical eye I do camera releases, I find that a bit disappointing. Perhaps I was expecting too much. Either way, it's a quality release for iPhone users, but it isn't really breaking new ground so my point was if the sky didn't fall in the last two years, it won't fall now. Anyways, irrelevant, as there is a laundry list of why I prefer Android to iOS

I’m a Windows guy myself and have been since my first 386. I have been an iPhone guy since the first one but can’t stand Mac OSs so the iPhones/iPads have been somewhat standalone devices for the most part in my household. For mobile computing and usage, iOS rules for it’s simplicity and consistency.

We have both iOS and Android devices in the house as well. However, for the mobile device that I have to operate on the majority of the day, iOS just works. I find the Android OS to be less intuitive and clean as do the rest of my family members.

When it comes to full blown computing, I find the Mac OS to be overly restrictive in multiple ways. I need more latitude here versus mobile which is why iOS is good with me but not Mac OS.

On another note, I’ve never been big on mobile photos as like you said, the files just aren’t very good. I will say though, I have played with some of the current higher end Android device cameras (including the Pixel 2XL) and they have been impressive (all things considered). However, I’ve been even more impressed with the camera system/s in my new 11 Pro Max now that I’ve had a couple days with it. The system is slick and they’ve come a very long way.

The reason I prefer Android is how much cleaner it is than iOS. Did the devices you play with have a custom launcher like Nova Launcher installed? I have my Pixel customized to an extremely minimalist degree. My custom icon sets make it far less busy than iOS and I put my apps on two layers, the first, visible layer my essentials and a few clean widgets, the second the rest of them. iOS lacks this ability to clean up the desktop in the same way. Some like the cluttered look of having all icons visible, I do not. As a photographer, I'm very visual and I like to completely control the look of the device I use the most. I struggle with the lack of control iOS affords me, especially when it comes to overall look and functionality.

Again, I'm not dissing iDevices or their uses, just pointing out that there tends to be a lack of knowledge of Android devices and their capabilities, especially among longtime iPhone/iOS users. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, my three home screens:

I'm SO happy I stopped caring about what my homescreen looks like/which launcher has milliseconds less lag than another, and which apps I need to sideload vs get from the app store. That time feels like another life ago! Moving my phone away from a tinker toy to a tool that I never give a second thought about was personally freeing, for me at least.

For the record, I've had more phones and phone OSs than 99% of people I'd wager, so that comment applies to more than even Android. I once kept a list of every phone I'd owned but stopped updating it after 30 or so. I was even hacking Casio personal assistants with custom version of Windows CE just so I could have winamp in my pocket (way before smart phones existed).

Haha who's the guy dissing now? Touchy...sorry I insulted your girlfriend, man. I use phones as tools, not as extensions of my self worth. My 'tinker toy' works best for me and judging by your reaction, you certainly do give a lot more than a second thought about which phone you use.

Hurt feelings aside, this is a gear forum. With as much experience as you have, it may be useful to list the features of the iPhone that you enjoy the most, that you find superior to what Android offers. I'm not being facetious, it would actually be useful for many. I'd be happy to offer a counterpoint and, egads, we might actually have a discussion others find enlightening.

I don’t give a flip what phone anyone uses and given that I’ve been on iOS for 8 years, no, I really don’t give much thought to phones anymore. I use what works for me, end of story. Keep slingin insults though!

Should have know better than to jump into a phone thread given that they are the most cancerous on all the wide internet.

I mean, you started it. Sorry, am I not allowed to respond in kind? Also, an edit to point that, to my point...you've been on iOS for 8 years...does that mean that you don't have extensive Android device experience since the 2011? And if so, isn't that the point that I was making? If you don't like the 'cancerous' nature of threads like this, don't be the cancer. You don't get to be bully and victim.
