Ryan, love these shots! The 85/1.8S is another special lens. Cannot wait for the 85/1.2S

Thank you so much Charles. I'm keeping you in my thoughts these days.
Best to you and the Mrs.

Such a funny comment. And really hits home.

Lightbulb went off, here, two months ago...
I owed it to myself to shed the F mount gears and stick with the S glass.
I had to really learn them, and THEN make a decision.
I had always been leaving them behind!

Decided to sell the F mount stuff.
If it became a bad decision I could always go back.
Sold all the F mount stuff. Used 35/50s exclusively for a while.
*I DID KEEP the 105e. still have it. had to keep it until I tasted the 85s!

Then the 85s came in, and I'm so in love.
The balance. The Synergy!!!!!

I do miss 1.4.
And Charles is right on, the 85 1.2, MAN, so much excitement for that!

you do have the best F mount lenses ever created!
so I know how hard it is.
but again, they will always be there.

Good luck!

Three snaps from earlier out by the fire table on the back deck. These I did edit, unlike my earlier ones. Ignore the purple in the second photo, that comes from some colored lights we have overhead, which is what the third photo is so you guys can see the bokeh rendering.

Very nice lense. Its rendering looks similar to the 50mm 1.8S. If only I didn't already have the 58G.

^^ I agree with you about there is similarity between 50S and 85S. I did the test compare 50S with most 50mm lens I have. It actually smoother than most of classic glass such as Zeiss planar and Leica Summicron.

As much as I love this lens, I don’t think its bokeh is better than 105mm for sure. but as Z user, it’s usability will be high.

I also look forward f1.2 version. Due to size limitation of f1.8/f2 glass, shooting f1.2 or f1.4 glass at f1.8 to f2.2 will always yield slightly better render at corner and slightly more balanced look. This is just a nature of f1.8 glass limitation unless they boost size and charge more.

Having said that, this lens is exact the one I need for Z system. As Ryan put it, it is the balance and synergy. Finger crossed.

I have 4 of them 28E, 58G, 105E and 70-200E. These lenses are what has kept me with my D850/D750 for now. Sure the new S series look amazing but the 4 F mount lenses are probably my all time favorites ever. If I adapted I would have to cater for the weight/size of the FTZ adapter and using these lenses there is little difference in the overall size/weight package.

The new 85/1.8S has me very interested for a f/1.8 lens as does the 50/1.8S. The 35/1.8S looks excellent but I am not a 35mm shooter normally. The 24-70/2.8S is reason enough to buy the Z6/Z7

Yep. 24-70 2.8S and 50 1.8S are great. I sold 58 (50 1.8S is not as 'magical' - but plenty enough for me). Technically if I can find a buyer for my 105 at a decent price here in Canada I can likely get 85 and 20 1.8 without adding much $. Choices.

I have to decide as well
Good luck
Such an amazing tool the 105e. I just don’t see myself grabbing it and the ftz much (and it’s weight) - when the 85s is there. I do appreciate it’s extremely satisfying bokeh et al.

I wonder how much the 70-200 f2.8S will be?

I am betting $2700. But the real question will be how much will it weight. If it is over 2.8 lbs I will pass. The E is 3.2 lbs. they should be able to shave some weight given it won’t have VR.

Good point on VR. Do you think it could be a bit shorter in length too?
The 70-200e is probably the best zoom I’ve ever touched.

I'm not sure it won't have VR. For longer focal lengths, in-lens VR is more efficient than in-body image stabilization.

Though that point is pretty well agreed on in body still does quite well and reduces size and cost. I’d bet they don’t put in body on Z lenses. Use 300/4 AF-S with Z7 frequently and results are magical. Surely it can handle 200mm.

The pictures show no VR buttons.

That makes it quite likely that it won't have VR. (There may be a possibility that in the Z series, VR will be so closely linked to IBIS that it is switched on and off in the menu only.)

So far the images from the 85mm f/1.8 S are living up to what I was hoping from it, the bokeh is truly incredible, without seeing side by side, the "look" of this lens makes me feel like it is a 1.4 and not a 1.8. Can't imagine what the the 1.2 S will "look" like.
