p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · NAU has broken his leg

I was at Nickerson Beach yesterday morning enjoying the solitude. I was close to a group of oystercatchers when a juvenile limped up to me. I was saddened to see NAU had broken his leg and was clearly in quite a bit of discomfort. You may recall my posting when his parents paraded him over to me earlier in the season. It was hard to watch him struggling to keep up with the rest of the family grouping yet he did and while walking was a problem he flew just fine. I wonder how he will do.

I don't think his leg is broken. I think the fishing line is wrapped around his leg tight enough that it's cutting through his skin and causing a wound.

I think you are correct as to how the injury happened looking at this crop

The fishing line appears to be gone and the white things are probably a fungal infection. I hope he beets it.

Sad to see. Is there not an organization that would catch and treat him. Obviously someone did before when they banded him

Yes it is. There are two teams of biologists that work Nickerson Beach. One was there that day banding black skimmer chicks and they stated they would take a look.

So these are fungal filaments and not the fishing lines?

This one also has a deformed leg and, looking closely, it might have been snagged on some fishing line.

Yes, it appears the fishing line was removed and the injury is infected

Thanks for documenting this injury.
Unfortunately fishing line is a danger for wildlife generally, not just fish.
Monofilament line litters the lakes and streams here and we frequently see birds tangled in it.

I wondered first what NAU was... , that poor guy. Although he can fly but it must hurt during the actual take off, I believe. Anyway, excellent images, Morris!

_______

I contacted Amanda Pachomski of Audubon who monitors the Nickerson Beach shorebirds and she is aware of the bird's situation. She has contacted the town of Hempstead Conservation staff for further action. The NAU marking, she says, is just a unique alphanumeric code to help banders identify the specific bird.

Thank you for doing this Dalite,

Amanda was on the beach when I took those photos. Her call for assistance will bring the same kind retired fireman that helped with the injured baby GHO this winter. They will take good care of him and I'm shore they will have him back in a couple of days.
