p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · noise reduction on Cooper's Hawk image

I am certainly no expert at post-processing, but since a member asked me about how I handle noise, I am posting my method here. This image was already posted on this forum, so I am cross-posting to N&W Forum and Post-processing & Printing Forum.

Since I am using Photoshop CS6, I use Adobe DNG Converter to convert the Sony .ARW files to .DNG files
that I open in Adobe Camera Raw. With this image I made no changes in the ACR default settings.

In this first image, (the full-size jpeg), I roughly selected the hawk about 222 pixels around it, then inversed the selection and feathered it by 222 pixels. This feathering makes a less noticeable transition between any filter applied to the subject and not the background, or vice-versa.

The second image shows the Neat Image preview before the noise reduction will be applied to the selected background. The little green square indicates a dark uniform area I chose that Neat Image will use as a sample for applying the NR. Note that the Neat Image preview really exaggerates the noise.

The third image shows the result of the noise reduction applied to the 222 pixel feathered background only.

The fourth image is the 6000 pixel wide image downsized to 1500 pixels wide. At this point, I once again roughly select the subject, but at only about 44 pixels around it. I then feather that by 44 pixels. I then
apply the PS ‘Smart Sharpen’ filter to the selected subject only. If more radical sharpening of the subject is needed, I will apply the ‘Sharpen’ filter, which I can always “Fade’ by whatever amount is appropriate.

I hope this will be helpful to the member that PM’d me, plus any others that may find it useful.

Thanks a lot Tony for this. I use Neat Image as well, but do it post sharpening. But I like this approach and will try it.

Tony, What did this young Cooper's kill? Whatever it is, it looks really outsize for this bird. If you're interested, I just pulled this up from Audubon (re: Cooper's Hawk prey):
Mostly birds and small mammals. Feeds mainly on medium-sized birds, in the size range of robins, jays, flickers, also on larger and smaller birds. Also eats many small mammals, such as chipmunks, tree squirrels, ground squirrels, mice, bats. Sometimes eats reptiles, insects.

Thanks for posting this. I too was interested in the specifics of how you managed "noise" in Post.

Thanks Tony, I need to get better at the selection tools, I suppose, I just use paintbrush. Always something to learn.

The thread you did on noise several years ago helped a lot

A medium-size eastern cottontail. Too big for it to haul away.

Thanks for sharing. I’m going to try out the feathering since I generally have selected the subject, inverses and then applied the noise reduction. Your method probably ends up more natural in the end.

You’re welcome. The feathering helps, since I tend not to do the most precise selecting.
