http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Nikon%20D500,Sony%20ILCE-7RM4(APS-C) ,
has similar fps as D500, the new AF system. Wouldn't that suit you (maybe you answered that already).

I'm looking for a useable e-shutter mode with a blackout free EVF during tracking a BIF, so no, the A7RIV doesn't work for that. If I have to use a mechanical shutter I'd just rather shoot my D850/D500 anyways.

Once I see how many MPs the A9II comes with (and if it isn't much of an increase) then I will consider the A7RIV to use for general birding but not really challenging BIF.

The "A7000" has always been a long-shot wish as a way to get pixel density with A9 type features at a more reasonable price than what an "A9R" would slot in at (A9R may be another long-shot wish also). But as has been pointed out, it would require a stacked BSI APS-C sensor which may increase the cost to make the camera a lot and that could put it in a price point that wouldn't sell well for Sony.

So you are saying you can't use the 6600 for action photography. Seems to me it has better AF tracking than the A7R3'and I've seen some damn good sports photos from the A7R3. What exactly is preventing you from capturing great action shots with the 6400 or 6600?

The a6400 and a6600 AF appears to be best in class for action... I have been considering the a6400 even before this week's announcement. The issue for me is the lifeless body when I connect an adapted 150-600 or even a 70-200.. the balance and control is very difficult. The original NEX and a6000 compact body design symbolizes the benefits of mirrorless but makes working with a telephoto challenging.

I may preorder the a6600 but not until the one more announcement is made in September. Placement of buttons is likely the main thing that will sway me from the a6400. Worth $500 more? To me, I believe it is. As far as size on the 200-600, I will use a monopod if necessary.

Seriously this is where a monopod comes to play. Any lens this big on a small body is going to be uncomfortable to handle their just is no meat on it to hold a big lens. Monopods a great for this . It takes the camera out of the equation, it’s now just a bolt on to the setup not part of the holding process. Besides that sometimes nice to carry around

I was just kidding when I made this fake conversation post about color choices for Sony's new a6xxx cameras. Turns out, they actually did decide to offer color choices.

Sony's APS-C product manager obviously came from an American car company.

"See we can start with this base model, and call it a Chevy.

Then we add this little piece of chrome over here, and call it a Pontiac and charge a little more.

Then we bolt on some fancy wheels, and call it a Buick, again another price increase.

Finally we put on a vibration reducing hood ornament, and a bigger gas tank, call it a Cadillac, and charge a ton for it.

The best thing is that all the models share the same core parts, same engine, tranny, frame, and come off the same assembly line. They all cost almost identical to make.

Maybe we should start offering more color choices?

This is genius I tell you, we are going to make a fortune!"

I ended up buying an a6400 as there just wasn't $500 worth of better in the a6600 for me.

Bill I took the a6400 out of Poof's hands yesterday in Valdez and had a go with gulls,of which where we were (Valdez fish hatchery) there were hundreds. She had the 100-400 on it. I'd been carrying the a9+200-600 for weeks and what a joy the smaller rig was to wield. Nailed gulls was a piece of cake and two days earlier I watched the 6400 put a little green focus squre on a sea lion's eye
I hate thatbit is a rangefinder style but really appreciate all the goodness inside of it.
In this vane, sitting around waiting on a red-eye out of Anchorage, I just pre-ordered the new 70-350mm G for the A7Riv already waiting for me at home. Me thinking the Riv's AF will be as good as the 6400's and the pixel density even better. Should weight about same as the 6400+100-400 for lightweight long walks for critters.

Robert, are you planning to use the 70-350 G on the A7RIV?? Are you using the the IV in crop mode when you put the &0-350 G on it?

Douglas it sounds crazy doesn't it. Even crazier is that we have the 70-300G. Here in AK I actually used the 70-300 more for landscapes than critters. Things we'll do for 50mm and a few less ounces I might be the only Riv user who never darkens the 61mpx door. 61 for me really was all about the cropability and the form factor.Poof loves the 6400+100400 so a win-win there. First real go will be Conowingo.

Last three weeks used a monopod+Jobu Jr.gimbal+ Sony a9+200-600 countless hours waiting for a bear or eagle to move. LOVED the set up and the monopod/gimbal rig was attached to the Kirk Security strap and allowed super quick pick up and move to a new position. My arms and back will eternally be thankful to Nikon's Steve Perry for this.

Have this lens for 2 days now. Very very nice glass. Build quality and feel is a notch below 24-105, more like FE 85.

Sharper than 70-300 FF (replaced by this lens) at 350mm for sure. Lighter than 24-105 and goes from 100 to 525mm. Great hiking/travel lens.

I just picked up the 70-350 today and am looking forward to getting some images with it.

I am looking at building a light-weight alternative to the full frame a7Riii kit. The 70-350 is just so much lighter and compact than the 100-400 + 1.4x TC.

I will continue to use the 100-400, but the 70-350 will also get use on the a7Rriii @ 18 MP as a walk-around lens at the local pond. It will also likely see use on an a6600, which will share the same battery as the a7riii, while being more compact and lighter. I've regretting selling my a6300, but am still getting some use from the a6000.

I can see the 70-350 riding in my bag with the 24-105 and a7Riii. Sony is providing lots of mix & match options by using the same mount on both Full Frame and aps-c.

I compared it to 24-105 today and its actually a replica of that lens. Build is similar. 24-105 is heavier and slightly denser.
Yes this is a sharp lens. As sharp as any tele i have used, sharp enough. Very similar to 24-105 in sharpness. 100-400 should be better but its in the ballpark, it will make you scratch your head when comparing the images. (I had 100-400).
I am elated because i was waiting for such a practical and lightweight thing. Note that 100-400 for me was also to be used on a crop body to reach 600 so I don’t mind losing the full frame compatibility.

I'm whacked by B/H again. Pre-ordered a month ago. Says in stock---yet no shipping notification. Should have learned by now. Will give them until Monday and then cancel. I bet Allen's has one

If you are talking about the lens, I'm in the same boat. Never had it not ship the day it shows available.

I'm thinking out of the box on this one now. Henry's in Canada.....why not? Warranty? I'm not worried.....I can take the 250 saved and put it on a State Farm personal articles policy for years. Not available at Henry's either currently but its really no rush but there is the principle involved and B/H fails on that yet again.

I could drive 2 hours and pick one up. I'll wait for B&H for the moment but the minute they start charging tax, the game changes. It appears to be in stock everywhere I have looked.

I just bought a 70-350mm to use on my A6500 but also am thinking I can use it on my A7RIV in crop mode. That will still give me 26mp. Would that be crazy? Figure if I am out just taking shots of some birds or my dogs it would save me from attaching my 100-400GM and be a lighter setup. Anyway going to pick it out in a little while.

Robert - aren't Sony Warranties OK for purchases made on both sides of the border?

I don't know honestly. Never looked into it. Actually never had to use a warranty....one reason why I bought (and received) the E 16-55G via E-finity.
In the meantime I cancelled the B/H order for the 70-350G and am giving Adorama a try at getting me one. If they fail I'll then revisit the idea of shopping in Canada.

Yes, plan on using both on the Riv but I'm also setting up Poof with a traveling kit for her a6400. On this past trip she became way too fond of the 100400...I'd kinda like to get it back, handing her the 70-350G will certainly please here since she is even more averse to weight than I am.
