I was not prepared for this, but got a shot!
I don’t have a macro lens, and the recent experience of photographing tiny frogs with 500 f/4 and 100-400 lenses had me subsequently in the back yard trying some other options. I was doing some test shots comparing a D850 and 70-200 f/2.8, to a Canon 7DII with a 2XIII extender on a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, which I learned gave no AF.
I was outside walking towards the back door of the house to put the cameras away, when I spotted a very rare visitor - a Cedar Waxwing was helping itself to the potted blueberries! I froze, as these birds are very skittish.
I had the 7DII in my hand with the 70-200 and 2X extender. Doh! The camera settings were not ideal, and I had to manually focus. It was not only difficult to get focus while the bird was jumping around the bush, but also difficult to break the mental habit of stabbing the back button for focus! Panic mode.
Five seconds later, the bird flew off, but I got one keeper.
