There were a few young birds still hanging out at a rookery island in the bay.
A little Green Heron and a gull with no leg to stand on

Thank you KCollett. I've been renting a kayak from time to time. Next year I will probably buy one so I can go out more frequently in the summer avoiding the biting flies and mosquitos found in wildlife refuges in Delaware during the summer.

Hi Bob, First of all, nice captures. Hate to do this, but those are both adults. IDing can be tricky this time of year, so understandable. You have an adult Green Heron, always much darker and much less streaking than the juveniles, and you have an adult Laughing gull transitioning to non-breeding plumage. A juvy would be browner. If you're interested, I just completed the 3rd of 3 pieces on the Green Heron. In that 3rd one, I have photos of both juvy and adult Green herons. Here's the link. Good luck!

Thanks for setting the record straight David. I am a 0 on 1 to 10 with bird identification. The little rookery island seemed to have mostly young birds so I guessed these were juvenile also. I have never been able to get that close to a Little Green Heron.

I wouldn't call you a '0' at all. You effectively nailed the species (Green Heron)!
