p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A couple pictures more from the 80's

Back in 1981 I only was in the first year of my professional photography education (1st grade of the 4 years course at the Academy of Arts KABK in The Hague)

Yet I found myself, through one of the models, asked to (re)shoot the collection of a couple of newly graduated designers (Academie Charles Montaigne / AMFI Amsterdam) after their first shoot by a 'professional photographer' had completely fallen flat

Didn't have much of a clue of what I was doing, so being the newby I was I thought I 'had' to do the shoot on my Hasselblad
For artistic reasons (although Madonna had not yet released her Horst P Horst lighting inspired 'Vogue' and 'Express Yourself' video clips, I already was something of a fan of that kind of dramatic lighting) went for a high contrast lighting
Little did I know I better should have used barn doors to counter spill light into the lens, or diffuser filters on the open reflectors to make it less contrasty
And as the cherry on the 'disaster waiting to happen' cake I had decided to shoot a black collection on a black black ground, not knowing course I asked for way more technical challenges then I bargained for that way

Didn't only run into them during the shoot (Mr Polaroid made a fortune on me ), but also when I had to make the prints
Due to my errors and ignorance there was spill light, highly over exposed next to severely underexposed area's, etc etc all over the negatives/shots, good for over more then an hour (and sometimes more) of fun trying to end up with / having to spend on a single print (trial print, develop, fix, examine with the light on, make a new print with some burning in and dodging, print, develop, fix, examine with the light on, decide for a new version, repeat the procedure, and again, and again, while at times due to fatigue messing things up, till after much trial and effort, at last the final print !)

Things go much easier and faster on digital, even if I only use Nikon Capture NX D (don't own or know how to use more 'sophisticated' software as eg Capture One, Photoshop or Affinity), took about 5 minutes to make these digital recreations
