NEOPRENE LENS COVERINGS FOR SONY 200-600 F6.3 (and 600mm F4/at bottom)

There are at least three options for neoprene lens coverings for use in the field with the Sony 200-600:

1. http://huganature.pl/sprzet.php?id=69&lang_id=pl - about $61 + $5.60/shipping direct from their web site...or via Ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-FE-200-600-mm-F5-6-6-3-G-OSS-lenscoat-neoprene-lens-cover-camouflage/133145288598?hash=item1f0013df96 (note that Ebay charges tax to many, if not all, states that collect it)
----
2. https://www.outdoorphotographygear.co.uk/items3692.html - about $46 + $9/Shipping
----
3. https://www.lenscoat.com/lenscoat%EF%BF%BD-sony-200600-p-3867.html - about $90 + $7/shipping
----------------------------------------------
For #1. The neoprene thickness in HugaNature (#1) is 2mm (stated on their web site).
---------------
For #2 (Outdoor Photography Gear in the UK): It is 2.8mm thick but being a fabric it can vary slightly. It is thick enough to give protection without getting in the way.

Kind Regards

Tracey
www.outdoorphotographygear.co.uk
----------------
For #3. The neoprene used for LensCoats [#3] is approximately 2-3mm thick.

=============================
FINALLY, I emailed ROLANPRO (owner is "Coco") regarding the thickness of his Neoprene lens coat for the 600mm F4 Sony (https://www.ebay.com/itm/ROLANPRO-Nylon-Waterproof-Lens-Coat-for-Sony-FE-600mm-F-4-GM-OSS-Protective-Case/173984194151?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT) - this is what he wrote back:

1-2mm thickness [so not as thick as other manufacturers]. But NOTE BENE: this lens coat may be 100% nylon and not neoprene at all (ask "Coco" via the Ebay ask seller form for 100% clarification on the material he uses).

Regards,

Coco

Thank you for your effort. I've ordered the lenscoat only because that's the brand I'm familiar with and have used for years. But it's nice to have choices.

I ordered the lenscoat the day I got notice the lens was shipping and they got here the same day. I do like the flexible mesh cover at the outdoor photography site.

I have outdoor photography gear lens coat for 100-400 GM. No real thought of spending 3 times for lenscoat version. I didn't buy the extensible mesh though

Thanks so much for this info! I have been searching on eBay, hoping to find something cheaper than Lenscoat, but to no avail.

I just ordered one from Outdoor Gear. Hopefully its transatlantic journey won't take too long.

I'm genuinely curious why you guys went with neoprene lens coats instead of the much less bulky vinyl skin option like Life+guards. In term of protecting the lens and hood from scratches, I imagine they're about the same. 3M vinyl skin is used on cars that are exposed to the elements more than any lens will ever see. I can see shock absorption as an argument but given the weights of these lenses and the thickness of the neoprene, I don't see it would be that effective. Aesthetically, these neoprene coats are ugly to look at.

There is a case for Canikon users since Life+Guards mostly have Sony stuff only (apparently in Taiwan, Sony is the most popular platform among the wedding togs). I bought 5 sets from them so far and I'm very happy with the coverage. I'm thinking of getting the 200-600 in the future, so I'm curious about my options.

Hi Hiep,

I think that many are going with the Neoprene is that it provides a little impact protection as well. For my soon to be delivered 200-600mm lens I think that I will get a neoprene cover in part for that reason.

I frankly do not like the look of any of them they just look cheap in my opinion.

Does anyone feel that birds or other wildlife are spooked by the white lenses and that it makes a difference.

I have not noticed my Big White 400, 500 or 600 with huge hood spooking anything but I do not shoot in the wild either which is why I am asking.

That's what I thought Rich, though the emphasis is really on "little" unless one is really after the thickest one.

I didn't buy any of them through their US distributor. I just contact them on FB, the shipping is $10 (about 2 weeks to get to the States). They have skins for pretty much all the Sony mirrorless lenses (even the 35/1.8 that has not even released yet). They have the 200-600 and the 400. I'm not sure on the 600/4, but I'll ask them.

Are you saying that you think that all of the covers (neoprene and otherwise) look cheap? The covers are there in part to help to protect the lenses from scratches and a little impact as well as trying to better hide the lens size and shape. Ask a gun or archery hunter if they have found that camouflage helps or if blinds (camouflaged or not) are of any aid.

I'm not sure if the brightness of the white lenses spooks birds more or not. I've always bought lenscoats to protect my large expensive primes from paint wear...especially the Canon white paint which seems easy to wear off (not sure how prone the Sony paint is?). There was one area on my 600II lens not covered by the lenscoat (because it was the tripod collar area where you had to stick it on and I didn't want to) that ended up with lots of paint chips over 6 years....underneath the lenscoat was looking pristine 6 years later. Really just helps with the appearance for resale by picky buyers. Now if you are going for full on camo clothing, camo netting etc... then probably better to complete the camo without a bright white lens. But most of the time you see camo on the lens and bright clothing on the photographers (myself included) so I don't think camo is the main reason people use them in North America anyways.

I've found the black treatment on Nikon lenses to not blemish and I only had a lenscoat on one of my Nikons because it came with it as I bought it used.

I went with the lenscoat myself, mostly from reputation. It fits very well. For me its mostly about protection. A sticker skin doesn't offer quite as much bump resistance.... and this thing is kind of clumsy especially balanced with a little mirrorless camera.

I'll be taking mine off this weekend at an airshow as I don't expect many bumps, and I have noticed the lens coat gets quite hot in full sun exposure since its not white. Not sure there are any lens drive performance implications with the heat but I'd rather not find out.

Neoprene for the a few reasons: shock reduction, insulation while handholding in the winter months, scratch/scuff protection. Don't really buy it for the camo, as I don't think birds care either way

I have a few coats from Huga Nature, green fern for the summer, and brown forest for the winter. Very high quality, just as nice as the LensCoat options, but MUCH more affordable (both coats only cost a little more than the single LensCoat). Shipping times are a little longer, so be patient.

I decided to just place an order. I tried to place an order/contact to HugaNature. But, either my end or their end blocked my sending an order.

So, I sent Hugo an e-mail. I hope that he gets it and reads my request.

I use my lens coats for protection and insulation, not for fashion shows.

Just buy sheets of neoprene and make your own. Plus you can use the neoprene for lots of other things.

Most birds and wildlife don't give a hoot what color your lens is.

Hubert e-mailed back to me about an hour ago and took my order. He indicated that my order would be shipped by the weekend. I completed the transaction and made payement as Robert had indicated as $63 for the Neoprene cover and $6 shipping. I ordered the Fern Green cover.

The lens cover from Outdoor Photography Gear arrived today, from the UK. I haven't used a lens coat before, but this one seems to be well made and fits properly. (btw, this pattern is called 'Reed/Harvest')

Got this same pattern for my 400 - less expensive and IMO better quality (with the edge stitching) than Lenscoat.
