Does anybody know if this lens would work with the kase magnetic filters system?

At my request Fred kindly tested his CV21/3.5 against the Sigma zoom here and showed a substantial difference with pretty poor corner performance for the Voigltander even stopped down to F7.1 on an A7R2. So I was expecting that on an A7R4 I would almost certainly not be able to use it to replace my Loxia 21, which I use to complement the Sigma zoom when shooting against the sun.

However, I received a copy of the CV21 today and did a quick comparison between it and the Loxia in the extreme corner on my A74R and the difference is not as large as I was expecting. So now I'm not sure which to keep for the occasional sunstar shot. At 50% on my high res screen they both look very good. Here are the 100% extreme corner crops from 61MP (minimal sharpening) with both lenses at the hardstop where they are optimal for infinity focus in the corners.

The cv 21/3.5ís Achilles heel is mid-zone at wide apertures. Itís pretty good at extreme corner.

Gorgeous astro photos! I use to live in the PNW and miss the beauty. Is that a single or composite shot? Tracked?

Thanks!

They are stacked, love the built in intervalometer in the A7R3 . I did one RAW processing for the sky and used starry landscape stacker to align the stars, then a re-processing for the ground using smart layer/mean for the noise, then merged the two final TIFFs. I would have rather done separate exposures for the sky and ground but I forgot my timer so I couldnít use Bulb; just pushed the ground 2 stops in post processing and dealt with the noise. Also forgot the dark frame so I had a lot of hot pixels in the ground 😂.

Yes, after some more side by side shooting this morning I think I won't be able to bring myself to let the Loxia 21 go, much as I like the idea of the smaller size and electronic distance readout from the CV.

I wish Sigma had used straight blades for better sunstars on the zoom, or at least blades that are straight once stopped down a little. I don't think I would carry anything else in its range in that case.

Does anyone know if aurora will make more filters aside from the kickstarter campaign? I'm interested in this lens but would like to purchase one of the aurora kits too

Kickststarer was just to kick off the first batch and buy them a bit cheaper AFAIK. They will be available through normal sales channels later on...

Finally had one of my Kase filters break on me. Noticed while removing it after this shot that the bottom tab had broken off. Can't find the broken piece. Can't hear anything rattling in the lens or camera, so hopefully it fell out when removing it and I didn't notice. Must say that I regret getting the Kase filters and wouldn't recommend them. Really hoping the aurora filters offer a more durable solution.

Thanks for the response, that puts at ease.
But they didn't release any information about when that would be right?

Sorry, missed the followup question. I don't know any details but I'd say after the kickstarted batch is sent out so not before October.

I think Sigma is evolving a new look for our cameras, different to what came before. Lenses, it might be argued, should have signatures, and this can be expanded to lens ranges too.

Fred has posted a great review of the Sony 12-24 2.8 GM in which there are lots of direct comparisons with the Sigma 14-24 DG DN.

After reading this thread back and forth few times and seeing the results from Fred I decided to pull the trigger on the Sony version plus the NiSi S6 filter holder. They are both arriving by the end of the week and I can't wait.

And WOW, what an expensive filter. At 450Ä was more than what I spent in filter in my entire life. Yikes!

Anyone has experience with the NiSi S6 that wants to give an update?

Got my Sigma on Friday and had some time yesterday to pit it against Sony 24-105 f4, Sony 16-35 f4 and Loxia 21 f2.8. I am pleased to say that this lens could replace all of them at their focal lengths (either beating or equaling).

Sigma x Loxia 21mm

I was surprised that the zoom was way sharper than the Loxia at those apertures. I expected a tighter fight.

Oh, yes. That sealed the deal on Kase internal NDs for me, and I still don't have polarizer for this otherwise excellent lens. Kudos to you for getting it over all at once.

Oh that was just the CPL I got, which is the only filter I use anyway.

It is very well constructed and I am sure it is great (did not have the time to put it through its paces) but it does increase the bulk of what I have to carry substantially. Oh well....

Thanks for the Kase ND tip, will take a look as well.

I just got back from Iceland again. Last time there I used my 16-35 GM a lot at 16mm. That's why I decided to give the Sigma 14-24 a try. I also got the Haida rear filter set for it.

It's an optically amazing lens, better than the 16-35 GM.
However, in the actual field I still used my GM a lot more because of these reasons:

- I liked the small size, low cost,... of the rear filters, but they aren't practical at all.
Having to remove the lens from the camera everytime you want to use/change a filter is a hassle. Most of the time I really didn't feel like it because of rain, water spray, strong winds, sand, dust,... and just used the GM with my 100mm filter system instead. Much easier, faster and easier to handle filters (especially with gloves on).

- I didn't feel like buying the huge and expensive polarizer for it. I wouldn't even fit in my bag with all the rest of my gear. In Iceland I use polarization a lot, so out came the GM again.

- To me 16-35 is a more versatile focal range than 14-24.

I knew those things beforehand, but actually trying it for a few weeks really made it clear how much easier a 100mm filter system is (at least for me).
I'll keep the Sigma for the time filters aren't needed and the wider 14mm ofcourse.
