I own FE 85/1.8, i hardly ever shoot with it because i use 55 every time i am supposed to use 85. So i want to do something about it.

Do you think Samyang 85/1.4 is a real upgrade from FE 85? In what sense?

Another lens i am thinking about is Canon 135L, my old flame. Does it work like a champ on Sony bodies now, with MC-11 ? When i used it last, which was years ago, it didn’t work so well, the eye af etc was not even there then.

If Sammy is a worthwhile upgrade then i am a bit inclined towards buying that, its native after all.

From my experience with the Samyang 85/1.4, it's an upgrade to the FE 85/1.8 in rendering but not in AF speed/accuracy. Both are sharp lenses even wide open.

I sold my FE85 for the Samy and don’t regret it. For portraits or slower subjects, it is superior to me. I’d have kept the FE85 if I used it more for travel. The Samy is small for a 1.4 but too big for on the go stuff for me. If you use the FE85 for that kind of thing, it’s hard to beat.

The only caution I'd have about the Samyang is that there is definitely a slight yellow cast or warmer tone to images it captures that, depending on the light, may require a little extra work in post. I've found its AF to be almost as good but I haven't used it for fast action much.

It certainly is. I sold my Batis 85 1.8 and bought the Samyang 85 1.4 and I love it. A truly excellent lens.

Thanks guys. I am tempted to make this move but i also an considering Canon 135 L. Lets see.
Samyang seems to be nice by all accounts.

Fred conclusion is spot on. For me it is definite upgrade in terms of rendering. I never liked Sony's rendering (even though i owned it multiple times). Sammy has slight yellow cast but other than that it is great lens. I try to use it a lot more than I did Sony as the output is really good.

I really like the way my Canon 135mm f2 performs with the MC-11 and the a7rii. It takes a split second to achieve focus, but once achieved, it's spot on. Another Canon lens in that focal range I really like on the Sony is the 100mm f2.

The rendering is better but I had slight issues with AF accuracy here and there and the motor was loud (probably just my copy) in AF-C. I returned mine because I need reliable AF for video, but do prefer the Samyang for photography.

Sammy AF is still iffy after FW updates?
I just read lenstip review where they have rated the sharpness as best ever, only behind couple of lenses, slightly. Those lenses are Tokina 20 and CV 65.

I still have af issues. It misses by a bit sometimes in af-c, but I live with it now. Sometimes unless you zoom in it's not visible, and still I take many shots so some of them are in better focus than others...

I really love the lens.
