It is a 10 year old digital camera. Who has a 1 year old stereo receiver or 10 year old television or laptop computer and expects to get parts and servicing? It is not realistic.

Wow. Really?

I have a 1976 Technics SL-15 turntable, a 1978 Sansui G-9000DB receiver, and a 1978 Akai GX-635D Reel-to-reel. And I can get parts for ALL of those.

Strangely enough, Nikon can still service my D2H and D2Hs bodies. What happened to the D3-series?

perhaps most D3s seldom break or need servicing like mine... ;') but that's strange that older model can still be serviced.

Honestly, I can go to US Audio Mart or Canuck Audio Mart or Fleabay and get the parts I need, or via contacts I've established in Japan.

But I can't go online and find, say, an EXSPEED II unit with flexible circuit and know with absolute clarity that THAT is the item that will fix my camera, and then do the work or have it done on the secondary market.

We build service parts for our automotive customers for 15 YEARS after stop of production, and parts are available long after that. Is a $5600 camera body any less of an investment than a vehicle based on the frequency with which one will buy one?

Which means, in my opinion, that a 7-year production cycle of parts availability for repairs is simply ludicrous. Sorry, I'm a little angry over the whole thing. Again, the worst part is that Nikon took my $1400 and did not fix the unit and there's no resolution. Yeah, sorry my job took me out of the country and away from my camera before I had a chance to test it, but that's life, and now I'm stuck with an unrepairable (per Nikon) unit, and if they can repair it, they are gonna charge me again, and will it actually be repaired? In this case they "adjusted" the focus and "adjusted" the metering and replaced the rubber. For $1400 there should have had some hardware or a shutter to replace. Instead, a smoke and mirrors repair and a large bill with no results.

My grandfather gave me an old, beautiful Nikon S3 when I was 12 and a Nikon F when I was 14 that he used for years when he shot for national Geographic and I still have it and it still works, and can still be repaired. I've been a Nikon shooter for 42 years.

I considered just buying a D850 to replace this camera, but about ready to just say --- it. And I won't be buying Sony or something else either. My D2H still works flawlessly, as does my S3, F, and my F3, F4s, and my F5.

Sorry for my bad attitude.

Can you get all the parts or only things like roller assemblies? Can you get a new motherboard for the Sansui or the Akai. A turntable is basically a motor that spins a disc and that you can get parts shows that the company has not bothered to update its products over the years. And the Sansui was still in production as of 2012 and so not a valid comparison either.

As for the D2 series cameras the fact if true than you can get electronics boards for them tells me that someone at Nikon screwed up and made too many of them. I have worked with low tech and very high tech companies in the USA and they all tend to have at least 10% dead inventory that they pay year after year to store and this is to avoid a write-off that would affect manager's bonuses which are based on quarterly profits.

I have had multiple power tools where the proprietary batteries were discontinued and so the tool became worthless. There are now companies that will rebuild the battery packs but it is hardly worthwhile to put more money into old tools.

I bought my D3's in 2007 but sold them in 2012 when the D800e became available. In 2014 when the D750 became available I bought one of these as well and also upgraded to the D810 and then to the D850. Digital is completely different than film where a 50 year old camera and 50 year old lens with a roll of fresh film will still be as good as when new. My D7200 outperformed the D3 in every single respect but then it had technology that was 7 years newer than that of the D3.

The Sansui G-9000DB was NOT in production in 2012. Last one rolled off the line in Japan in early 1980. Facts, man.

I just finished repairing a 1974 Teac deck for someone - got all of the parts. Hasn't been made since 1977.

Yes, I can get almost any part for any 25-year old piece of equipment.

You want to compare robots or PLC's/HMI's, or other industrial hardware? Allen-Bradley's line of PLC1, 3 and 5 units went out 20 years ago but I can still get parts for them. SLC500 PLC's went out of production five years ago, but I can still get parts from Allen-Bradley. Yaskawa, Fanuc, ABB, Mitsubishi, list goes on and on ad nauseum.

Your "parts on the shelf" example is moot because parts are not capital equipment and cannot be written off unless they are part of the original purchase with the equipment or other CAPEX purchase and should have been written off with the equipment as it depreciated. If they are surplus parts manufactured and there is no way that they ever would be used, then obsolescence of inventory is a valid write-off towards the burden of the indirect or overhead cost.

Jesus, how many cameras did you frickin' have to buy in that period of time Went a little overboard, didn'tcha?

You're missing the point on several levels -

First, there are a thousand or more people here on this forum who are pros. And that's how they make their money. I make my money by being an engineer (not the train kind, but that's cool too). And I'm a 100% disabled combat vet. Just throwing that out there so you know I'm not an equipment snob... So I do what I can afford. And for a thousand pro's, there's ten thousand people like me. And just like my '05 Forester, where the parts are on the shelf for another 3 years before obsolescence, maybe, just maybe Nikon should support their older cameras - point #1.

Second point - If they didn't have the parts, THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE CHARGED ME $1400 TO "REPAIR IT" BUT NOT REPAIR IT. For that money, I'd have moved towards a D850.

Hey did you do the programming for the PLC's? I was the product manager for the Allen Bradley RSview. Lots of memories interacting with the Allen Bradley brass.

Yep. Still doing it occasionally even though I'm the manager now. Because we were bought by the Japanese in 2012, we switched mostly to Omron. Only our robot systems use AB Compact Logix. We use Pro-Face for all HMI's.

Studio is a nice product, but the HMI screen count should have never been considered as a pricing item by the brass.

Best,

Kev

I know of KEH, bought a few things from them, but do they do repairs? Or are you saying get another body from KEH?

Thanks.

Yes KEH has a repair department. I would contact APS though, in Morton, Illinois, first. They were a Nikon repair center but became independent.

http://www.nikoncamerarepair.com

You can call them first and talk to them about the problem and see what they suggest. I've sent a few things to them for work and there's fast turnaround and done very well.

KEH stocks a lot of parts for repair. I've learned to contact them first before sending in old equipment to see if they have the parts needed.

You can also go down the list of authorized repair shops to see who has the needed parts.
