Thanks Mukesh, that makes me not feel totally stupid . So now, I just need to find the time to do the right thing and if I come to the conclusion that Sony works for me, then I will likely do what you've done. If only I had the time to pull it off.

Thanks Joshua. Ecuador is my favorite place (especially Galapagos and the Mindo area for birds). Looking forward to your photos of birds.

Hi Vivek, I didn’t make it to the Galapagos this time around. I did put more emphasis of birds in the cloud forest of the mainland. I am not quite back home yet, waiting for the last leg going back to LA at the airport in Miami.

I used this lens, with and without TC some 90-95% of the time. Here is the first image I had the chance to post from there...

Impressive images. Question, how does the 600mm function with extension tubes? Does Sony make an extension tube? My reason for asking is that I'm interested in photographing hummingbirds with my a7r4 and would like to get a magnification of about .25.
My previous system was a Canon 1dsmk3 with 300mm f2.8 with about 30mm of extension tubes. The image quality was great. I don't see a 300mm f2.8 in Sony yet.

Hi Dan,

I do not have the 600mm myself. As to your questions regarding extension tubes though, Sony doesn't make any. Many of us are using the Kenko extension tubes for the Sony FE mount. Part of their benefit is that with a little surgery they can be used so that the telephoto and zoom lenses that can use the 1.4X and 2X TC allow both TCs be used with the extnsion tube sandwiched between them and still offer AF and metering. Of course, when using the extension tube between both TCs, the lens can no longer focus to infinity, but this does have application for closer subject matter.

Dan, yes, Sony hasn't introduced a 300mm f/2.8 yet but based on the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020, they will have that lens shortly prior to that event.

While Sony doesn't make their own extension tubes, there are generic brands that work well with the E-mount lenses. Kenko is probably the well known and well made ones although there are less expensive brands on A*****n readily available. And yes, those tubes have electronic contacts that transfer data and maintain AF.

I had extension tubes with me on my recent trip but I didn't get to use it. I had use it locally to let me stack 2 TCs. Although I lost the infinity with that setup but I could get it to focus approximately to about 50 feet or so and get the increased magnification that way. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much, Mukesh and Ronny! I was more selective and deliberate there but based on the wealth of birds, I ended up with approximately 5K of images. I am working my way slowly but surely through them.

Although my recent trip to Ecuador was all about birds but it was more about capturing colorful birds whether perched or moving at a fairly slow speed and not about BIF, like of owls, falcons, eagles, kites in-flight, etc. Well, hummingbirds do fly but they fly so fast and they are tiny. No matter how good the A9 and GM 600mm are, they cannot keep up with those tiny birds in-flight. Plus, no one can track their movement at fairly close distance since they are small; for sure I cannot. And then, the lighting conditions are low. Quite often, my ISO setting went all the way to ISO 12800 with the shutter speed of 1/250 sec. Forget about freezing BIF at 1/2,000 sec. However, hummers do hover when feeding and that’s the opportunity to capture them seemingly in flight .

To show the rich colors and details though, it is best to capture them while they perch, like the one below. It is amazing to see something this colorful in nature. Please note that I reduced the blue saturation a little to tone it down. I used my A7r IV some 95% of the time to get the most out of the details.

I'm shooting with a D500 and 500 PF, mainly small birds at near to medium distances. When I add a Nikon 1.4x iii, the focus seems to search more and takes more time. I'm also seeing a noticeable loss in image quality , which can be corrected by more Photoshop sharpening. I was considering buying the latest Nikon 600mm f4 FL for more reach and sharper and faster performance with the 1.4x iii. However, I'm also considering getting an A9ii and 600mm f4 GM. The weight of A9ii,1.4x and 600mm GM (840mm equivalent) is 1.7 lbs lighter than a Nikon D500 with Nikon 600mm f4 FL (750mm equivalent). I'm more inclined to go with Sony since I prefer to shoot without a tripod, but will likely still use one when I use a 2x converter.

I'll still be retaining my D500/500PF for long hikes or for when I'm set up for 840mm/1200mm with Sony and a bird comes too close. My question is: is it hard to shift from Sony to Nikon and back with regard to operating the camera/lens? I've never used Sony before. I'll likely use a grip extender. With Nikon I use AF-on back button single point focus and shift to group focus with the preview button for BIF.

I switch back and forth between Nikon D850/500PF and A9/200-600 day in and day out. It will of course take you a little time to learn the Sony system and setup the buttons, Fn screen and My Menu to avoid ever going back into the complicated menus. But after getting used to it, you should be able to shoot both systems.

The Sony back buttons can be setup with way more options than just switching focus modes. You also have two back buttons so one can do one thing and the other do another without having to reach for the Pv button on the D500. Way better than the Nikon way IMHO.

At this point in time, I'd never spend the money on a relatively heavy 600 FL, the A9II and 600GM is where I'd put my money these days. The Sony TCs are much better than the Nikon ones, especially the 2xTC. The A9(II) can focus so good that you can shoot BIF with a. 2xTC on the 600GM (see above and earlier pages here for some amazing examples of even smaller, fast BIF at 1200mm).

You will surely want the grip for ergonomics with a big lens. With the improved ergonomics of the A9II and the grip added, the camera is pretty close to the comfort of a D500. I think I still find the D500 a little more comfortable but not by much once the grip is on the A9II.

There are a couple of advantages though with sticking to Nikon. One is I'll be spending about 10k USD for a Nikon 600 FL (Hongkong price), compared to about 18k USD for Sony, since the lens is more expensive and I'll have to buy an A9ii and 2 converters. The other is with a D500 I'll have 900mm f/4 while with Sony I'll have 840mm f/5.6 with the 1.4x (bare 600mm seems like it'll be too short for my needs). Nikon though, aside from being 1.7 lbs heavier, might be coming out with a new 600mm soon or within a year?

Well, you are comparing the Sony 600mm lens plus The Sony A9 II plus 2 TCs vs just a single Nikon lens. Of course, there is a significant price difference between the two. And then you are comparing a crop-format sensor vs a FF sensor. Those are not fair comparisons ; sorry for stating the obvious. The Nikon lens you mentioned, will that be a DSLR lens or a mirrorless lens, you think? DSLRs are on the way out and there will be a lot, I mean a lot of other lenses that Nikon will introduce first before they are even thinking of introducing a 600mm lens designed for mirrorless from the ground up. It took Sony about 5 years to finally introduce the GM 600mm.

Haha I know, it's very specific to my current needs and financial considerations. Thanks for the insights. Great point about the time frames involved here. Sony indeed is currently way ahead of the mirrorless curve.

To be even more specific: small bird in dark surroundings. Comparing a Nikon D500/600mm FL at 900mm f/4 to a6ii/600 GM/1.4x 840mm f/5.6, ergonomics wise, Sony will have a huge advantage if handheld, less so if on a tripod. IQ wise, both will be excellent but Sony will have less noise especially if a big crop is still needed?

BTW, fantastic shots here AGeoJo, congrats!

This image was captured using the 61MP A7r IV in crop mode. The GM 600mm plus 2X TC was used. The image was then cropped to this. The effective focal length of this image is approximately 2,400mm! Again, this image is nothing to write home about but I am impressed that the details are still there. The eye of the cock-of-the-rock is well defined and actually sharp and some feather details are visible. Take a look at the moss covering some branches there, as well, please.
