Although the development of the area is delayed though due to a lawsuit by the Audubon society but my favorite location for the burrowing owls has been off limits this year. I can only reminisce and peruse the existing files in my vault. Thankfully, I took a lot, I mean a lot, over the last 7-8 years or so…

Is that your file? If yes, what was the aperture used for that?

As you know, bokeh rendition depends on several factors, such as aperture, distance between the target and the background, contrast of the background, etc. Most of the time, the bokeh of images taken with that lens will be rendered smoothly but there are shooting conditions that would result in less than smooth. In addition you need to look at the larger picture to evaluate how the bokeh is rendered and not from a crop. It seems to me that it is a sizeable crop.

I don't have a 600mm F4, but with the 200-600 at 600 F6.3, I regularly see an out of focus area like that. The 1 and 1/3 stop difference is huge.

Ah, okay, I replied to your PM. Yes, it is likely that the aperture contributes to that and the background seems to be fairly close to the target.

Although I really enjoy capturing images of birds in flight but most of the time, the feather details are not quite there. Although a high shutter speed helps freeze the motion but the inherently resulting high ISO setting takes that partly away. That’s the case where (semi) perched birds comes in handily, especially at locations where the lighting conditions are not ideal. You can lower the shutter speed just enough to freeze some slight movement and a lowish ISO as a result, helps preserving feather details or details in general.

Thank you... but... sadly... it's a rental...headed to Bosque del Apache soon. Anyone need a kidney...

The plan was to buy this beast however... a full home renovation had other plans for my funds.

Heading to Bosque, huh? I was there several times over the years. Towards the end of that period and at my last visit, I started playing with different approach. And I also tried to capture something else other than birds using that lens. Here are 2 images from that wonderful place…
