Taken 7/27/19. Torrey is Utah's first International Dark Sky recognized city and has ordinances to help preserve their dark skies. Last month I was at one of the best dark sky sites on the planet - Mt. Cook/Aoraki National Park in NZ, but it was cloudy every night I was there and I never got a chance to grab a MW shot. Big disappointment, but I knew I had a trip to south central Utah at the end of July and figured I would have lots of chances. Nope - clouds/rain socked us in every night while I was there except the very last night, when we had to get up early the next day to catch a plane in SLC (clear skies of course returned to Torrey after we left). Only myself to blame for not making the 20 minute drive to Capitol Reef for a good foreground instead of settling for a view off the back porch of the house we rented overlooking Torrey. The city ordinance calls for shielding on lights to direct them towards the ground. Also discouraged are sodium lamps. You can see in the lower right the effect that even one non-compliant resident has on the scene. The light at foreground left comes from another non-cooperating neighbor. Still, Torrey has a fantastic dark sky.
