p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · GFX - calculate vignette on adapted lenses beforehand ?

Hello,
Is there anyway to calculate vignette of a lens to see if it covers the GFX mount beforehand?

Not really, unless you know the image circle - which I don't usually see except for tilt-shift lenses.

As a general guide, most lenses under 50mm will vignette (the wider, the more), and most from around 50 and up are usable to varying degrees. But there are lots of exceptions. You really need to find a reference online or ask someone who uses it to get an accurate idea about a particular lens.

Thanks for this information.

I really need to learn and test the various aspect ratios against all the manual lenses I have.
However, this will be a major undertaking...

That will be worthwhile to do. A couple of thoughts:

1) Test at close and far focus. This can be different, and at very close focus, many lenses that don't otherwise cover the GFX will do so because the image circle is larger. However, some have interior baffles that can block part of the image circle, so testing is still the best idea.

2) Most lenses will cover GFX in square and pano modes. Test them at the full 4:3 aspect ratio, and for those that don't work well, you can try another aspect ratio if it's a lens that you'd really like to use.
