p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Four monkey species

Here are images of the four monkey species found in Costa Rica. There were taken today on the Osa peninsula. All were taken in deep shade under the canopy with flash (SB-800) and a Magmod Magbeam wildlife kit.

Howler

Squirrel

White face (capuchian)

Spider

Nice job getting all four in one day. I particularly like the first one.

Thanks, Morris.

It was difficult balancing flash power, exposure compensation and ISO for a balanced fore/background exposure - mostly a guessing game, plus, they move so fast, from dark backgrounds to light backgrounds that it's pretty much impossible to get most exposures right.

These were a quick-and-dirty post processing - when I get home, I'll do a better job of post-processing so they'll look more balanced.

Hi Bert,

You might want to try setting your camera in manual exposure to get a good ambient exposure of the subject. Set your flash for TTL-BL (Balanced Light) and use matrix mitering which is required for TTL-BL. This usually produces wonderful results and the system will adjust for the flash extender. Nikon flash is the best of all brands at this.

Thanks for the tip, Morris. Is that using auto-ISO?

p.s. Manual exposure would be very tough as the lighting conditions in the rain forest vary significantly from shot to shot. Sometimes there's good light, other times there's harsh back-lighting and other times there is deep shade. Using auto-ISO might be a good idea, as that would vary the ISO to accommodate a selected aperture and shutter.

My biggest problem shooting with flash and ambient light, is that the shutter speed is somewhere between 1/60 and 1/250 - which when shooting with a 500mm lens (even with VR), can be problematic.

I prefer to shoot in Aperture-priority adapting the ISO speed and exposure comp. manually, depending on the shooting situation.
