Very fine captures Ted! One rarely gets these birds without the flowers in the foreground, background, and all-around!

If the truth be told, Ted has been an excellent tutor and his exercises make my wife laugh.

My Salvia and Porterweed are in movable pots and are positioned to catch the afternoon Sun and provide the cleanest background possible.

My Trumpet vine is trimmed to isolate flowers with a minimum amount of distraction.

Last season I won the LIhummingbirdplants.com photography contest because I listened to Ted.

Who knows what the future will bring

Thanks for sharing Ted. These are amazing. Have been to a local arboretum a few times, will try to keep these in mind. Did these involve any flash setup?

You present an interesting exercise to see what imperfection each photo has. They are all pretty good photos, but there is something that keeps each of them out of the superb category.
Regardless, I like them all.

I love the flowers that attract hummers and I love hummers. So, hard for me not to love these shots even though some may find distractions in them

Douglas, it is easy to isolate a hummingbird to a flower with a great background if you know how to do it.

The point of my thread was to enlighten. Hopefully a few will glean and apply.

In 2017 I received Third Place with a photo I thought was excellent.

Ted kept pointing out "background, background, background" the following season.

In 2018 I received First Place with a photo that was distraction free.
