p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Make a dull sunset shot dramatic and colorful? What to do?

This didnt seem to fit the post-processing forum, bc its somewhat a landscap-ish question. When I'm not working on my personal landscape photography, I'm and industrial photographer. I have a shot of a location with a structure that is like an antenna tower but wider. Think industrial crane. I was hoping to get a great sunset shot but light fizzled due to clouds moving it. And so, I have a small area of bright sun right at the horizon and the rest of the sky somewhat agitated clouds. The structure, in a wide view, is silhouetted against the sky. There is a significant amount of sky (28mm on FF).

While I experiment, I'm looking for suggestions to add some sizzle. For example, if there were some way so accent the cloud structure or edges? Sounds challenging, but I thought I would ask.

I use ACR and Photoshop.

Ideas welcome.

ps: Sorry I can't post the image.

Try sharpening/ unsharp mask.
Amount 24
Radius 50
Threshold 0

With the first number being the one to move around a bit.

You can do amazing tonal manipulations using "a" and "b" channel Curves in L*a*b Color Mode in Photoshop, but you can't just randomly "fiddle" around like a lot try to do, you have to really understand the tool, but that's where I would start. Of course without seeing the image, hard to know anything for sure.

This technique really punches up some images dramatically and quickly. Gives them a pop that is quite striking. Here are the steps.

1) Open an image in Photoshop.
2) Go Image > Mode > Lab Color.
3) Then go Image > Apply Image.
4) In the dialog box change the blending mode to Overlay and lower the opacity to something that looks good. Lower the blending opacity to 35%
5) Image > Mode > RGB (to change it back to RGB).

That's it!!!

Absolutely a post-processing question.
