For years, I accumulated tripods to satisfy my shooting needs, from 35mm up to 4x5. I always over-bought, buying more capacity than I needed.
As I topped age 70, the heavy tripods suddenly seemed over-kill. I took a serious inventory of capacities, tripod heads, etc. That led me to get rid of a lot of great aluminum tripods made by Gitzo and Bogen/Manfrotto (3035, 3051, 3047, etc.), when I determined that CF was a reliable alternative to aluminum. It also helped when I sold my film equipment.
I bought three CF's - Manfrotto MT055Pro, Gitzo GT1540G, and an Induro CT-303. However, I did keep three aluminum models for collecting purposes - Vivitar 1321, Leitz Tiltall, and a Slik Master67 prototype. The "collectors" still get use, especially when I don't have to venture too far from "the beaten path".
