actually that new design is not so new. it has been in use with their SOAR mounts for precision shooting for awhile.

I find the crudeness of design of the Acratech to be very functional. In any case, preferences are preferences. We all have them, and we're all never going to have exactly the same one. I know tons of people love the RRS lever.

It's day 3 after testing positive for Covid and it seems to have put me in a foul mood. Staying in one of 2 rooms for an extended period of time starts to make me a little punchy.

Oh...and the word paranoia exists for a reason.

just remember the the original Lever Lock literally follows the corner of the clamp and tucks under the plate. you gotta try really hard to screw up and inadvertently open it. a very deliberate action

So almost 4 years later, I ended up buying the new Heipi tripod as it seems to be an improved version of the PD tripod in many ways. The Gitzo Series 0 is still working nicely but it is quite inconvenient to go super low. And it’s not quite as tall at time. Now if there is a smaller packing Series 2-3 of the RRS I would be interested.

Thanks. Pfizer, Pfizer, Pfizer, Moderna, Moderna bivalent for me. Back in early November for the last one. Hasn't been so bad and I started Paxlovid yesterday and that seems to have helped. Caught it from my wife, and I'm following her lead.

My son has medical issues which complicate treatment when he eventually gets it, which is a little nerve-wracking.

In any case I went way OT.

Ive owned a lot through the years, currently I use a TVC34 for most things.

I also have a Novoflex triobalance system with 2 sets of interchangeable legs, their 5 section CF legs for super compact travel, and a set of 3 section CF legs, which are kind of medium.

I also recently wound up with a Gitzo series 5 G1548 MK2. Ill probably end up selling this as im already covered for heavy lenses with my RRS one.

5 (actually 4 since I inherited one from my wife).
I have two Gitzo's - an old tall stout metal and then a CF 1227, which I've had for maybe 20 years and it still performs great.
Bought the 4-legged Feisol CT3442 in 2014 with center column for traveling and while its light - it's not so sturdy.
Then I bought the Leofoto LS-364C 2-3 yrs back - love it! Rock solid (much better than my Gitzo).
I use Acratech ball heads - the Ultimate and GP Ball Head with Lever Lock.

Sorry to hear about the Covid....I'm one of those lucky ones that has never gotten it.....wife has had it, most relatives...lost one of my best friends last year to it (was a fellow photographer). Hope you get over it soon.

Hang in there. Note that paxlovid clears the virus for about 60% of patients, but for the rest, it essentially “postpones” the virus… so until you test negative 72+ hours after your last dose, it might come back and leave you contagious.

Good luck for you and your family.

Had a Feisol ct-3442 and Feisol ballhead since 2009 which I used maybe a half dozen times. Replaced recently with smaller tripods which I hope to hike and travel with much more often.

Peak Design Carbon Fiber
Leofoto LS-324C + Leofoto LH-40
RRS pocket pod and BC-18 clamp

Leofoto went on its first day hike recently. Peak Design goes on its first flight here shortly. I like the Leofoto in use much more, but the PD is so, so small which means I'll probably use it 10x. If I become a tripod-person, I'll go ahead and get a legit RRS to replace the IP-renegade Leofoto some day.

tsdevine - get well soon and may your family stay healthy! hope you have a good support system, not just for your camera!

For years, I accumulated tripods to satisfy my shooting needs, from 35mm up to 4x5. I always over-bought, buying more capacity than I needed.

As I topped age 70, the heavy tripods suddenly seemed over-kill. I took a serious inventory of capacities, tripod heads, etc. That led me to get rid of a lot of great aluminum tripods made by Gitzo and Bogen/Manfrotto (3035, 3051, 3047, etc.), when I determined that CF was a reliable alternative to aluminum. It also helped when I sold my film equipment.

I bought three CF's - Manfrotto MT055Pro, Gitzo GT1540G, and an Induro CT-303. However, I did keep three aluminum models for collecting purposes - Vivitar 1321, Leitz Tiltall, and a Slik Master67 prototype. The "collectors" still get use, especially when I don't have to venture too far from "the beaten path".

RRS one for travel, a heavy Leofoto for when I need something sturdy (astro), a couple of tiny things, a gorilla pod or two, and some cheap skinny things I bought when I started shooting digital point and shoots. So 6 or 7 I think?

I've got about 5 tripods now, but have ordered the new Heipi 3 in 1 variant because it appears to offer some nice features at a very reasonable price. I've not received it yet, but based on the videos I've seen, it looks to be a winner.

My tripod habits have changed. I used to shoot half the time from tripods. All my tripods were similarly sized "medium" legs with 28-30mm max legs diameters that were roughly spec'd for my typical camera loads.

As IBIS/OIS stabilization tech has improved, I tend to shoot mostly handheld or with a monopod. Now I favor smaller and lighter legs since I may carry them without ever using them. If I do use them, I don't extend all the leg sections. That limits flex.

For big lenses I carry big legs with a gimbal that I can use at full height. So may current selection covers the extremes from featherweight to heavyweight without much in the middle.

Notice that I never actually admitted to how many I have . . .

To a point I agree with you in use of tripods. Where it also adds up is when longer exposures are wanted. For me going out at dusk or later does include a set of legs regardless if they end up being used and usually, they are. They also are very useful in other shooting rolls too.

1 for general work that includes use with a gimbal
1 for travel and has seen a lot of it.

both general use heads are now identical.
