For me, the announcement of the a7rIV will make the used camera market pricing for all brands drop! Yea! Should be able to pick up some really nice gear at phenomenal pricing soon. I was on the upgrade train for a while until my family grew and then my hobby felt like a guilty pleasure, so I’ve gone the other direction, buying what are still really great cameras at very attractive price points. D3x for $900, D5 watching, a9 waiting to hit the $1500 used mark. Maybe grab an a7rMKIII when it hits the $1000 mark. Good times to get gear cheap!

The a7rIV is an amazing technological advancement, but also designed by the Sony marketing machine to hit the dopamine button.

You may still be waiting a while... we are just now seeing the A7R2 hit near the $1000 threshold.

To buy the Dino cams cheap you did not need the A7rIV! They made themselves extinct on their own.

I don't know about the A9 and A7Riii for around $1500/1000. That may be wishful thinking. I think around $2000 for A7riii is reasonable. I would think it would get down to 1.5 and 1k when the A7r5 and A9m3 comes out.

You may be waiting until the a7r5 comes out before the riii makes it down to 1k. Unless it's an riii that has a ton of use and wear on it.

The difference this time is the amount of tech jammed into the a7rIV and the price point at launch. I haven’t see anything this aggressive since Canon’s 5DMKII, and the difference at that point in time was the cameras preceding the 5DMII were dinosaurs. The slew of cameras, even 10yr old cameras, coming before the a7rIV are very worthy, tech capable machines which take great images.

I can echo some of your sentiments. I bought the a7rii used from a seller that upgraded when the iii came out. I still love this camera and outside of af for very fast moving birds I have yet to outperform the camera. Yes the menu system can be laggy but I personally can live with it. To me the rii is the bargain of the camera world currently

I want to thank Sony for this camera! It managed to bring a 50.000 USD technology (a few years ago), that I was drooling over - the Hasselblad 200 Multishot - into a 3.500 USD incredibly more versatile package.
And it managed to kick the competition's ass, because the Panasonic S1R, who did it first:
-has lower single shot resolution
-inferior AF system
-limited selection of lenses, compared to Sony
Kudos to Sony! They didn't sleep on their laurels, and managed to keep our significant investment into their system, relevant and worthwhile.
