Which composition of below do you prefer, the 35mm full frame equivalent or the square image.

Photo taken at 1:38 PM.

Looking at a turtle on a log
Heavily cropped, tripod mounted Leica R 100mm f2.8 Apo-Macro-Elmarit and Sony A7rIII
ISO 100, f8?, 1/15 second

At Fern Hammock Springs, Juniper Springs Recreation Area, Ocala National Forest, near Ocala, FL

Thanks for your input.

Thank you Morris and Birdie.

Morris,

Is this what you had in mind and how does this compare to the original 35mm Full Frame equivalent?

Thanks again.

Rich

I like the 3x2, but on a shot like that I'm also a sucker for trying out a 16x9. It definitely depends on what you plan to do with the photo, but I feel like some sort of wider crop that cuts out everything below the reflection and puts the turtle in the middle/bottom third would be really nice. Lets it breathe but cuts out other stuff. Very nice capture.

First as it has more room to breath with animals I don't like a shot too tightly framed and I think I like the 4/3rds version that Morris suggested even better.

Thanks everyone. I have now elliminated the square image and will now have to decide about the first image (Full 35mm euivalent image) and the 3rd image (4/3 proportion that Morris suggested). I thought that the square image was getting a bit tight.

Guys rule never shoot anything dead on. Shoot the object or subject at 3/4 so you get some depth to it, makes a heavier person a little less heavy. Gives image depth to it . If it was a face it would make it skinner than flat looking. Makes a 2 dimensional object 3

Just think about this image in 3/4 pose than give the turtle spec to walk where his eyes are directed

But the big one to avoid is shooting pretty much anything straight on. Sure it has its moments but I rarely shoot anything flat or straight on

Take the first image . Now in your head rotate the camera about 30 degrees left to subject. Than wait till his head is coming to you than give him space to walk into. Shoot, Make print , collect money than wash and repeat

If you ask I will tell you but I make it a point not to critic . Problem is people can’t take constructive criticism. For those that ask , I give them a lot of credit.

First one, it is more balanced and the background actually enhances the viewer's curiosity.

Hi Guy,

Thank you for the suggestion. But, in this case, I was shooting as I recall from a Bridge or just off of the bridge at the turtle with the wrong lens, my Leica R 100mm f2.8 Apo-Macro-Elmarit instead of my Sony 100-400mm GM lens. I would have had to jump off of the bridge or go down an embankment or into the water in a National Forest due to the trees and other plants to change the postion of the tripod mounted lens and as it was the image was very heavily cropped. Also, unfortunately that was as far as the turtle was turning its head toward me as the head was turning to the left and to the viewed position. Sometimes we can only get what we can get.

After more thought, I think that I am going to go with the 4/3 ration that Morris had suggested.

I expect that I will post it in the Sony FE Image Thread and the Leica R lens thread ltomorrow.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

First

I'm so used to 3:2, 4:3 only works for me with some shots in portrait orientation.
