Some comments just make me chuckle
No of course it wasn't 'harsh' light, you can tell by the heavy shadow under the subject
Sony colors, Nikon colors, Canon colors...................hmmm unless they are posted RAW I guess it's always an interpretation and personal taste for how we process or don't?
So Geoff, you get an award for the most in focus and super cool Speed Demons IF Most impressive buddy!

Thanks Karl.
Exactly what I was thinking about the harsh light comment. Look at the EXIF settings, look at the shadows...obviously fairly harsh light!! These were ~9AM which might be good light on Dec 21st but of course sunrise was 5AM just a week off of the summer solstice
I also agree about the colors....and the color of that pond scum?, duckweed?, whatever it is, sure changed depending on the light angle and how far out the bird was, the more vibrant green/yellow ones when the bird was much closer and shooting more down on the lake surface. Of course half these shots being Sony and half Nikon and the color of the pond surface changing throughout is down to processing and the angle of shooting. I'm not even sure what the correct color is for these...it is a confusing, vibrant color to start with. But I think the swallow color remained fairly similar throughout all of these, with the exception of the drab juvenile in #6 (as it should be).
