I could not help but run to and climb up the brain rock mountain to express my feelings for witnessing such mind-blowing beauty as wild thunderstorm light bathed the entire area.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Thank you for looking

Beautifully executed and we can get a sense of what you must have felt from the scene itself (the UWA lens renders your figure too small to see your expression).

I love the foreground but personally I don't feel including a human figure into the shot does it any good. Without the human, the shot looks rugged, rough...with it these feelings slide away.

Definitely extraordinary light! Enough to make a lot of photographers do the happy dance...

It's a great shot, but I have to agree with chez - a shot without you would have been interesting to see too

Wow, this is awesome, Mark. Looks like you're angling to be a human lightening rod... ;o)

Excellent image with or without you in it! I'm assuming this is with the 12-24 and if so, it is treating you very well.

Wow, love the clouds and the foreground! I think a person is often necessary in grandscapes to help define the proportions, especially in this one. Otherwise, the viewer is left wondering how big is that area? I always enjoy your photos.

Yes I know those feelings of being at a great location/atmospherics. Your pic captured that feeling quite well!
Cant wait for monsoon season!

Thank you, everyone, for the great feedback.

Yeah, anytime someone allows or puts a human figure into landscape photography, it is going to be divisive IMO. Honestly, for the most part, after seeing a million, the-human-figure-in-landscape photos, the fad got overdone (yers ago) for me. In fact, I never liked any human elements in my landscapes for the longest time. BUT, here I enjoy it, although I relate with those who may not. Having said that, it was a genuine expression of excitement, euphoria and better sense of scale in the image.

So, for those who lean the other direction, here is the image without it!

Thank you!

Mark,

I have no issues with a human figure in landscape photos provided they add to the image in a meaningful way. It is a conceit to think that there is anything like "pure landscape" untouched by the hand of man left anymore on Earth. In this particular instance, if euphoria is what you wanted to show us, it would have helped to see your face instead of a tiny manufactured arms-stretched-out figure :-)

Hi Rajan. Thank you for your valued and valid feedback here.

"It is a conceit to think that there is anything like "pure landscape" untouched by the hand of man left anymore on Earth"

Honestly, I am not sure what you mean by that statement. I do not see anyone here discussing or debating whether there is or not.

"anything like 'pure landscape' untouched by the hand of man."

For clarity, what I was referring to is how it has been my observation that landscape photographers generally gravitate one way or the other in their desire to include human (or human-made) elements in their landscape photos. I have observed a little more polarized reaction to those types of images. I have had more tendency to not prefer them in Landscapes.

I have no issues with a human figure in landscape photos provided they add to the image in a meaningful way.

I too enjoy it a human figure in landscape when done well. One of my favorites for some years was Aaron Struder's wonderful work:

https://www.instagram.com/andrew.studer/?fbclid=IwAR0VkqiQY2NhHdvpeie-_-JkWO_3LgYa-TgPmSSvo3-zypVG0WJz6q-w67M

In this particular instance, if euphoria is what you wanted to show us, it would have helped to see your face instead of a tiny manufactured arms-stretched-out figure

I had no goal to show anything here in the sense of the interpretation of the image, or a desired emotional response to evoke or may have evoked in me. Its much more simple. I like the image (enough to work on it, share and put on my website) and I am at peace if some like it, some don't, and some may feel the "tiny manufactured arms-stretched-out figure" was not done "in a "meaningful way". Especially with human figures in landscape photos, varied reactions are to be expected. That is why I included the second version.

Mark,

It is absolutely your prerogative to craft your images in a way that first and foremost satisfies your own artistic impulses. No argument on that.

Your enthusiasm is infectious. I think it’s great that we can enjoy whichever photo appeals to us at the moment.

I like both versions. Humans in a landscape can be fine if they're conveying an emotion. It's when it's yet another Instagram model staring forlornly into the distance that it gets kind of old.

For me it's not about the inclusion of people in a photo...but how they are included. A person standing posed in an image is totally unnatural from my view...equal to the snaps of people jumping in the air with the Grand Canyon in the background. Now if there were people just walking in the image, not posed...I'd find that scenario much more acceptable. At least that is how I draw my line...nothing posed.
