I know there are a ton of adapters out there for the Z cameras already. But has anyone found any chipped adapters? I know there were people making chips for old AIS lenses. An adapter that could say be chipped to always show a 35/2 lens mounted when it's put on the body would be awesome.

Why do you need one like that?

Unlike the DSLRs, the metering is off of the sensor. Nikon can not cripple it.

You only lose some stabilization. 3 axis is still available as opposed to 5 from lenses with the D encoder.

This is something that “chipping” can not provide. So, there is no gain at all!

Remember, when you chip a lens or an adapter you damage it.

I don't need one....It'd be nice not to have to change it in camera and I believe the focal length affects the image stabilization. So if it's not changed it could have an adverse affect. Although that's just a guess.

Yes (FL affects IBIS) and that is all the more reason why you should not have an adapter with a 35mm chip!

I think you guys are talking past each other. OP is saying he wants a single purpose adapter, that he would only use on one particular unchipped lens. That way, the adapter plays two roles, mount adapter and chip.

Yes GDSF2, that is correct. Also the Z6 does not record the focal length that is set in the raw file if it's a non-chipped lens. So when you open up the images in lightroom it displays 0mm.

It’d be interesting to see if 3rd party will come up with a solution for this. Haven’t seen one yet, but seems like a good opportunity for the fotodiox/Techart etc of the world.

Interesting idea. It does present a few issues - would that adapter be pre-programmed to support a few AIS/AI lenses or it would be left to user to program it for whatever lens they want to use it with. Also, would it work directly with Z body thru FTZ or will still need DSLR to program it - at that point it is getting closed to sticking a chip on the lens and programming it with a DSLR.

I would personally still like an adapter than super-glue-ing a chip on a beloved classic lens. I did that once. Turned out it is a pain in the neck and still did not work on Z 6. People did have luck with it so I must not have aligned the chip properly.

Looking back, more than an adapter that goes over FTZ, a semi-smart adapter that directly mounts to Z body with support for EXIF data would be awesome!

It is the chip part that is problematic. As I explained above, the chip will have to have a FL. This would make the body to think (say, 35mm) one lens is attached. When you use a 180mm AIS on the adapter, for example, the IBIS will be wonky because the camera is led to believe a 35mm lens is attached by the chip.

Again,, OP is talking about a chipped adapter that yould be used with a single lens. Ir would only be used with that single lens. No other lens, ever.

I have an idea, if Metabones, Techart, or Kipon are reading this, listen up.

Make an adapter with button(s) that you can select various AI/S glass by pressing up/down. Put a digital display on top so you know what lens you have selected. Put a USB port on the side so user can program their own custom AIS glass. It will then have an AI-indexer on the F-mount side so it knows the position of your aperture ring. It can then relay that message to the "Z" side of the mount so your Z camera will always have the right EXIF. This is basically a very advanced version of the single-use Dandelion chip. I will pay a LOT of money for this adapter.

Anyone wanna bring this up as a suggestion to these adapter companies, just go ahead and do it.

I don’t really see the point. Nikon has already built that functionality into the camera, see p302 of the Z6 manual. You can assign the choice of non-cpu lens to a custom function button, so it is super fast to choose the correct lens info when changing lenses.

The Non-CPU lens registry is nice, but has limitations. For instance, the exif will not show the correct aperture you're on. Also, you're limited to just a few lenses. Most people who are into MFNG have a lot of MF Nikkors.
