p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 27in Monitor, 3840x2160 OR 2560x1440?

Hi folks,

I'm in the middle of having to decide whether I should purchase two monitors. Both are 27 in, but I'm trying to decide of the 4K is necessary for picture editing in the long run.

One's the Benq SW271
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1360177-REG/benq_27_sw271_uhd_4k.html

And the other is the newer Benq SW270C
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1481844-REG/benq_27_sw270c_professional_ips.html

I'm leaning towards getting the 1440p monitor because it was just released and it has USB C charging along with some refinements made to the hardware. Is there any logical reason to go with 4K, even if I'm just sitting at my desk at an arms length staring at this screen?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Marcus

The only real reason to go with 4K is if you need to see a full res 4K video on screen. And if you want to see your type, icons and palettes super small too, then go for the 4K. I'm using a 27" Eizo running 2560 off my iMac 5K, which is set to exactly half and equal to Eizo and it's exactly the right res for that size screen.

Little confused here. Are you trying to decide between two monitors vs. one? Or have you decided to get two, and trying to decide which two?

FWIW, I use a Benq SW2700PT 27” with my 27” iMac 5K. Both are set at their native resolutions: 2560 x 1440 and 5120 x 2880. I cull my images in Bridge on the Mac, as I can view more at the higher res. I process in PS CC on the Benq as I like the image scale and color space better. Works for me.

I also prefer the higher res Mac display for most non-photo work since I get more real estate on my desktop for multiprocessing.

Hi, sorry about the confusion. I'm trying to just get one, and trying to decide between the two. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth having the 4k resolution but I've read that some don't like the how things are scaling in 4k.

While I own one 5K 27" iMac, I do all my processing and printing from our 2550 27" iMac machines. For me, LR behaves in a slower manner on the 5K machine, possibly for reasons I don't understand, and I find no benefit in the higher screen res when processing. Screen calibration is important, or at least determining a reasonable screen brightness is critical if you're matching a print, in my mind.

Curious to see what you decide to go with Marcus. I've been using a Thunderbolt display with my MBP 15" for general usage and editing, but I've been thinking about getting a more photography oriented display. I don't print or do professional work, so I probably don't need all the advanced features of the pricey monitors. That said, who knows how we will be viewing images I take today 10 years down the road?

Regarding resolution, it seems to me that at 24" and 27" the drawbacks of 4K still outweigh any advantages, and that 4K is better suited for displays 32" and larger.

I would rather go for better quality, especially better color consistency, than resolution. That may depend on your type of work, though. Maybe the Eizo CG2730 is the right kind of monitor for you.

One never has to many display pixels. They need not all be on one display and you need not edit image on every Display attached to you computer. There is nothing wrong with having cheap and expensive displays attached to your computer. Mixing expensive and cheap displays save you money. What is wrong with that. Colors do not neet to be perfect. Display colors are never going to match you ptints. For print reflect light and display emit light. If you do things right and use decent display calibrate and color mange correctly. Prints and display image should look very similar.

On my main workstation I have two 20" IPS 1600x1200 4:3 100 PPI displays and a 24: IPS 4K 3840x2160 16:9 185ppi display IMO its a great setup...

I love it. In one sentence you're never going to match screen and print, then in the next line pretty much the opposite.

Close is not a match and the image will display with different colors one each of the displays you have connected to your PC. A perfect match is not possible nor required.

What are people's thoughts on the SW240? Is it as good as the SW270 just smaller?

Excuse the potentially boneheaded question, not super knowledgeable when it comes to computers and such.

FWIW, I'm running an iMac Pro with native screen rez of 5120 x 2880. Compared to earlier monitors, I find this real nice and wouldn't go back. The iPro does have a 16GB Vega in it so - I think - video card would play an important part in performance. Not to disagree with Peter - he is the master while I'm just a journeyman - but I've always felt that, assuming you have the power to drive it (and the $$ to buy it), you can't have too fine of resolution nor too much available color. Deadline coming got to go.

Res - The problem with running that rez on a 27 inch screen is that your image is half the size on screen when viewing at 100 percent. That can make is very difficult to see all the detail in the file simply because it's too small. Unless you've got some sort of extraordinary close focusing ability built in to your eyes, you're likely to be missing out on crucial detail. Or you have to be half the distance to the screen as you would for a "normal" screen. Ideally, you want to be just a bit farther away from the screen from the point where you can barely make out the pixels.

The 5K screens are great for showing you your full 4K video without interpolation but not really the best for photo editing. I use my 5K iMac screen ONLY for Photoshop palettes and nothing else but I have it running at exactly half the native resolution, matching the Eizo right next to it. No matter how many times and parameters I've used to try and calibrate that mother, it's never even close - not even in the ballpark or the Eizo. And I even tried using the Eizo profile as a "target" in the X-Rite software. Just sort of gave up after a dozen attempts and stopped worrying about it. Leave the color to the pros, not the iMac Pros.

I am, however, somewhat intrigued about the idea of a new iMac Pro as a computer. They weren't available two years ago when I bought my iMac. Spec'ing out a new Pro is surprisingly expensive, running in the $12K-13K price range. It's been a long time since I spent that much on a computer and don't have much interest in the new Mac Pro. Only if I were editing 4K video on a regular basis - for money.

I recently met a BenQ ambassador who explained most of the differences between the monitors to me. He does an excellent job on his youtube channel talking about the technical details.
