Is it unusual for a hawk to have blue eyes? What kind of hawk is this? Taken in Tallahassee, FL.

Likely an immature Red-tailed Hawk. Eye color will change as it matures

Nice pose!

Thank you Karl and Birdie. I want to call him Napoleon from his pose.

Looks like a red shouldered hawk by the belly markings and the red shoulders. The eye is likely more yellowish Great shot, though.

Red shouldered also gets my vote. Excellent shot. It's possible the eyes change color as the hawk matures, much like humans.

In many Hawks - especially Accipiters - the eye starts out watery gray and then becomes yellow as the hawk matures. It then becomes increasingly darker and richer in colour over the years and often ends up a firey orange.
It is one of the key markers in determining the age of hawks.

Thanks for all the information, especially about the eyes. We have some red-shouldered hawks around so it sounds like this may be an offspring.
