Going to Chile for the TSE. I have a big dilemma on the equipment. For the Great Eclipse of 2017 I had used my 600 mm f4, but with weight restrictions for the internal chartered flights in Argentina and Chile I don't plan to take it. Instead i plan to take the 100-400 Canon f5.6-6.3. I have 1.4X II and 2x II converters in my arsenal. The two bodies I have are the 7D II and the 1DX II.

What combination of the above would give the "best pictures"? 7D II by itself given the 1.6 crop factor or the 1DX II with either the 1.4X or even the 2X (although I have never used the 2X with the 100-400)? Or even the 7D II with the 1.4X?

Thank you

Jas

I expect it'll be a trade-off between higher resolution, where the 7DII wins (244 pixels per pmm vs. 152 ppmm), and noise, where the 1DXII clearly wins for high ISO performance. Have you considered renting a EF 400/4 DO IS II ? It would handle the 2xII extender a lot better than the 100-400 L IS, and it weighs only about a pound more.

For TSE it is important to consider contrast and chromatic aberrations in addition to pure resolution. This is because the high dynamic range of what you want to capture. Teleconverters reduce the contrast a little, and might also add some other aberrations. It is my experience (though from 2006 with much lesser equipment) that ISO noise is not that much of a problem. I would go with the 7D II and 100-400 without teleconverters.

Lucky you. I'm envious.

Do you have a link to the eclipse path? I'm guessing it doesn't come as far as North America?

I am travelling with a company out of the UK called Astro-Trails. No, the path comes nowhere close to the US.

Here is a link to their website: https://www.astro-trails.com/2019-total-eclipse-data

And this one is a more detailed site: http://eclipsophile.com/total-solar-eclipse-july-2-2019/

If weight is critical, I'd consider Olympus 4/3 and the fixed 300/4 or adapt a different prime. Zooms are not the best for the contrast, nor does the 7D II have a very good sensor.

I really don't understand how a trip specifically for an eclipse would not have a decent charter with sufficient allowance for baggage. Wouldn't some people bring telescopes, mounts, etc.?

I shot the TSE of 2017 with a 6DII and 100-400 II and was pleased with the results. Take the body with the best exposure bracketing.

That's what I thought too. And I am not sure why they have this restriction. I suspect they want to charge for extra baggage.

Bracketing is fine in the early phases and I am not worried about exposure for that phase. I use a software called Solar Eclipse Maestro. It runs a script through the various phases of the eclipse. At totality and after it becomes a whole different ball game with a series of exposures in rapid succession varying from 1/1000 of a second to 4 seconds! Each of these are a stop apart. Too fast for a manual change of the settings on a guided lens.

I found 600mm on a full frame to be a good focal length for the corona. So, i would take the 1DX and use the 500mm + 1.4x. Have fun. What's your tracker?

I can’t take the 600 because of weight restrictions. I am taking an AstroTrac TT 320 as I figure I really need tracking for the 2.5 minutes of totality. The longest exposure is 4 seconds.
