p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Injured Coopers Hawk

This guy wound up in my back yard yesterday. His left wing is injured or possibly broken. Can't fly. He can run and "hop" but not more than that. My yard is enclosed so he can't really get out which makes him safe from predators. He's too strong and fast right now for me to try and catch so playing the patience game. When he's weaker and/or hungry I may attempt to box him. Called my local wildlife rescue center this morning and am waiting to hear back from them.

I see you are in SoCal. If you are close to Lake Forest please give the Birds of Prey Center a call:

I have already spoken with California Wildlife Rescue Center in Malibu and am awaiting further instructions from them. They may send someone out to help me corner and capture the bird.

The bird probably doesn't know how lucky he is to have landed in your yard.

Good for you. This is the second post I've seen with an injured Coopers hawk. I have one that hunts around my house and it's easy to see how they get injured. In high-speed chases, they go after other birds, acrobatically dodging branches and other obstacles. One day I heard a big bang on my front door. When I opened the door, the hawk was standing on a pile of dove feathers, but no dove. The hawk apparently went after a mourning dove nesting above the front porch and probably smashed the dove against the door, but the dove escaped. The hawk appeared to be ok, too.
