p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Major E-M1 MKII firmware announced

Olympus just announced a pretty big firmware update, most notably bringing the EM1X AF algorithms to the E-M1 MKII.

More details on DPReview.

This is a great news! The updates are substantial and many. Not just some vague "bug fixes". 3 year old camera receiving such updates, kudos to Olympus! Also this makes me think that EM1.4 is now ways off if EM1X was to be original EM1.3. Regardless, this is excellent.

my guess; there is a new sensor involved and they need more time to roll out the new cameras based on the new sensor. so em1 ii lives a long live and its still relevant

This update gives one even less reason to buy the EM1x

I will be testing this update on one of my EM1.2’s when I get home this weekend. Let’s hope the update lives up to the press release. The last time they a big update with new features on the EM1.2 we got focus stacking. So here is hoping.

I think that was on the EM1.

I shot with the new EM1.2 firmware today and I did see an improvement in focus, although it still is not in the big leagues IMO.

True. But kudos to Olympus for this firmware upgrade so soon after the release of the E-M1X. This and the MC-20 are good reasons for me to remain with Olympus.

Yup. However hopefully it might attract newcomers to the E-M1.2.

It did. I placed an order for new EM1.2 after reading all the f/w updates.

The main thing I noticed is that my settings were not fully saved when rebooting and this happened again when I replaced the battery after charging. Some buttons were not correctly assigned and the MF in AF mode was no longer enabled, and the EVF style was not maintained. Is this a bug? Nice to have flicker compensation. The 5 x 5 is a bit meh. Center priority AF mode might be useful. -6 EV sensitivity sounds good, I wonder if we will notice? I have always found the AF to be about the same as the Canon 5DIV to be honest, despite the "not up with the big boys" comments.

The 25-point group AF is HUGE compared to the 9-point group AF for tracking BIF and fast-action sports. To me, this is one of the most significant upgrades.

Doesn't appear to be. I have just upgraded my firmware. The saved settings function is the very last stage/step of the process i.e. after you have turned off and turned on the camera again - as that is when saved settings is being restored. You had probably ended the upgrade process before this important last step.

Good to hear it's just me. I did complete the process and 90% of my settings were saved, which is what was odd. Then, when I took the battery out to recharge, the few settings that I had reset to my preference after the update still were not saved when I switched the camera back on. It'll probably sort itself out.

Do you know of a detailed explanation of the new EM1.2 focus modes. I might not be using it correctly. I have the following settings:

AF = CAF or CAF+TR
25 Points
Silent Low drive
Face priority = off

Lens = 40-150/2.8 mostly at 150mm

I was able to track slow birds against sky, but a faster, smaller bird against a treed background resulted in the focus jumping to the trees. I did the old test to shooting the license plate of approaching cars going about 60kph and the focus from shot to shot was less than perfect, although pretty good. I did have good results following basketball players. However, the focus could not track the basketball arcing to the basket with a treed background, even though the ball is inside the frame for the entire sequence - same as the bird scenario. I had my D850 with me and it was significantly better at all these scenarios.

So, either I'm doing something wrong or my expectations are too high. It appears to me that the focus requires objects to be large in the viewfinder, ~25% or greater, with minimal movement away from the middle of the viewfinder.

Any suggestions?

I am thinking of getting the MC-20 too, Bobby. Are you planning on using it with the 300 or the 40-150 or both?

After updating, both of my E-M1 II's showed wi-fi enabled. I am 99% sure that they did not have the wi-fi enabled before I applied the firmware updates. The updater app confirmed it saved and reapplied my old settings.

Did anyone else notice this happening?

If the update process is erroneously enabling the wi-fi that is a bit of a security, privacy and power consumption concern to anyone not realizing it was enabled.

Definitely C-AF but not C-AF+TR which does not or did not work well.

I would not consider the 5DIV to be one of the big boys when it comes to AF.
