This attractive species is around for a day or two in the late spring or early summer.

We have had day after day of gusting wind, making macro difficult and reducing the number of insect species venturing out into the open. Yesterday the air became still for half an hour or so and the insects started to bask in the sun.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, some at f9, mosty at f11, hand-held.

The stereos are crosseye.

Terrific set Harold! Can you recommend a better than 1:1 macro lens for Nikon F mount? I've tried reversing rings, but they almost require a slide stage to focus, perhaps I'm un-learned in the macro area, and the larger magnifications than 1:1
also require slide stage for focus. School me a bit please.

The species is always a winner for images.

Its degree of cooperation varies. Today I couldn't get close to one.

Any macro lens can be used with the camera on a tripod, perhaps with a rail too but that is hopeless for highly mobile, and often scarcely accessible insects. A tripod is liable at least disturb, possibly damage, the local vegetation.

For those, had-holding is the normal option. Flash may help to freeze motions during exposure but is more weight and bulk to carry. My focusing mechanism is a combination of arm and back muscles.

A budget way of getting very good results, and which I have used a lot, is with a high quality supplementary macro lens on the front of a macro lens. I used an MSN-202 on a 100mm (not suitable for shorter FLs).

Thanks. That angle works with species with short antennae, not so well with others.
