Went out on a pontoon boat run by a birding organization on a dark, sunless evening and headed to a few location where shorebirds nest. I discovered the difference between "birders" and photographers who like to take bird pictures.
A birder seems content just sighting a bird through binoculars and hearing their call. Then it is time to move on to the next location to see how many bird species you can see in a short trip.
A photographer would like to get a lot closer and stay longer to get a good shot, preferably in good light, with the birds eye clearly visible. It would be ideal if you were close enough so the bird filled 30% or more of the sensor.
Last night we saw a lot of different birds but none close. Over the course of a two hour plus trip I took about 40 pictures, a low number for me.
None were particularly good given the conditions and distance but on closer examination I saw that this Rusty Turnstone at Assateague Island was feasting an old family recipe for crab cakes handed down through the generations.
Lesson learned - Photography trips to photograph birds - YES; Birder trips to spot birds - NO
Sorry for the noise - bird moving, boat moving, no light - sometimes you just have to go with the flow
