On the longer side (e.g., >200mm) when people complain about lens size I generally ignore those comments. Once you have tried hiking in the cloud forest with a Canon 1D series and a 500mm lens plus TC, then an equivalent m4/3 setup is nothing in comparison. People with no (or limited) experience can find anything to complain about sitting in their armchair. However, when lenses start to get this big on the short end then I sit up and take notice. Given the cost of this lens, and the size, I begin to think that a full frame system might be the way to go.....or a different lens (or two).

Of course there is no equivalent FF lens like this, so no direct comparisons can be made. I suspect it will not be a hot seller since its range is unusual. Most plump for 24-70mm and 16-35mm FF equivalents or similar. It is good that we are still getting interesting mFT lenses though.

I agree. 20-50mm is an unusual range. I suppose it's meant to complement their PL 8-18/2.8-4 lens. The fast f1.7 fixed aperture is nice for low-light photography but 20mm is generally not wide enough for night sky or indoor photography like church interiors.

The FL range looks great. UWA to 50mm. Potentially takes the place of 16-35 & 50mm, 2 ff lenses. And the 1.7 aperture is pretty cool, too.

I have wanted a range like this for a while. Canon 17-40 made it close enough, to 50mm, I suppose, 35mm ones aren't as long as I'd like

1.5 lbs not bad, especially for such a fast (1.7!) zoom. 1.7 is pretty awesome!

Reminds me of Nikon's old 24-50, except wider and faster.

Seems like it would be great for video, but as a stills lens it's very much for niche applications where speed & wide are both needed. If the edge performance is good it may be an excellent astro lens.

Not something I'd buy, but I'm quite size sensitive.

WTF?

No, Panny's response to the Oly 12-100/4 is their 12-60/2.8-4 OIS. Their usual 'less long but smaller' take, much like the 12-35/2.8, 12-32 pancake and 35-100/2.8 vs the Oly equivalents.

The 10-25/1.7 is a video-centric lens for folks needing a fast wide/normal zoom for video. It'll end up welded to GH5s bodies.

Indoors, I find the usual UWA zooms go wider than I need but not as long, and the standard zooms go longer than I need but not as wide. This lens is just the range I would want, and bright enough. I'm seriously thinking of switching to MFT for it (from Sony APS, was thinking FF next). I came into the MFT forum for the first time to see what people are saying about it...

Actually I would say this lens is not a response to anything but rather something completely new and something aimed 99% at film makers. This shows through even more when you know the aperture ring is stepless and can't be changed to stepped.

It's large, it's heavy, it's expensive as hell but for high end film makers it's gonna be cheap and very versatile. Nothing for me though but a very cool lens!

How would a 10-25 complement a 8-18? Seems like you converted one to 35mm and left the other one.

No, it doesn't. For some reason, I thought it's a 20-50mm lens. My bad!
