I preordered mine on June 13th from B&H but its still on backorder. Anyone else in the same boat?
I too pre-ordered mine from B&H in the first minute when preorders could be placed. I was also attending Kando 3.0 and left to drive there on August 9, the date that the lens was expected to ship, and I naturally assumed mine might be in that first batch so I called B&H, told them to hold shipping my lens until 8/21, so that it would arrive after my return on 8/24. They agreed to do so. Then, on August 12 I got a notice from B&H that my order (Order #1057895264) was still on backorder. This unnerved me so when I checked in at Kando on 8/13, there was a B&H rep there (B&H was a partial sponsor of Kando) and I asked if he could check up on my order. I never heard from him again while at Kando, but assumed that my lens had been set aside to ship on 8/21. Unfortunately on 8/21 I received another Backorder notice from B&H and at that point I sent them an e-mail asking what was going on. Following is the response from Isaac H, of B&H:
Unfortunately, at this time we do not have any concrete information from Sony when we will have more of these in stock. We have received some shipments, but it is being released in limited quantities by the manufacturer. We fulfill all orders in the same order as they were received. I wish I had more detailed information for you but at this time that is all that we know.
I found that response unsatisfactory as I've been following this thread and know many folks had ordered from B&H, and likely more than a few after I placed my order, and yet my order was still "back ordered". So I cancelled my order and found the lens elsewhere. Interestingly I had a similar experience with B&H when I preordered (the first minute again) the 135mm F1.8, and again found the lens more quickly elsewhere after receiving numerous "backorder notices". At the time I assumed this was a fluke on B&H's part, and thus it did not deter me from pre-ordering the 200-600.
So, after dealing with B&H for more than 20 years, it would seem they have grown too large to care about customer loyalty or customers who "aren't connected". And more importantly to me, the phrase:
We fulfill all orders in the same order as they were received.
in Isaac H's response to me is far less than truthful, if not an outright lie. If I cannot trust a dealer, I go elsewhere.
Therefore I've placed my order for a Sony a7R IV with another vendor, who has treated me far more honestly in meeting my needs for the 200-600mm lens. And that won't be the last piece of gear I order from them. My motto is "He who dies with the most toys, wins".
