Not sure where this 200-400 came to life but no way in hell would it work for the Olympics and a 1.4 is impossible to build. Seriously this is one of those big fish stories. For the Olympics they need a 200 F2 no question about it and a 600 F4 along with there 400 2.8 or don’t show up.

My shorthand might have seemed like I meant a 200-400 f/1.4 but I was referring to the 200-400 f/4 with 1.4 built-in. It litters the sidelines of most sporting events these days. I bought the Canon one when they brought it out in 2013. Nikon brought there 180-400 version out last year.

600/4's are relatively rare at the sporting events I watch. 500/4s a bit more common. But 400/2.8, 300/2.8 and 200-400s seem to be the majority. Of course everyone has a 70-200/2.8 on their shoulder. I haven't noticed many 200/2s but maybe I missed them due to their small size.

Here is an entire shelf of Canon 200-400s with 1.4TCs at the CPS support room at previous Olympics...and we wonder why we still see Canon dominate sports....one word: "support"

You still can't cheat the front element diameter that would be 178mm. The 600/4 is 150mm...largest in current production.
Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 gives you an idea of the front element. Of course Fresnel design would reduce length and weight...it would be nothing like the Sigma but the front element would be huge so a thick lens unlikely to fit in any current backpack other than the dedicated single lens supertele ones.

That must be the guy from the other thread that doesn't like the Nikon 500mm f/5.6 pf, right?

I wouldn't be able to make the switch from my 400 GM to a 500f/4. Definitely worth the jump from 400 to 600 though. Since I'm not an avid birder, I do find that the 400 is plenty for what I enjoy shooting, but that tempting reach of 200mm more is downright wicked! As long as the weight doesn't go up much more than the 400, we will have another winner in the long lens FE family!

The weight of the 500 pf makes it a dream. If only Sony had the technology. The 500 5.6 pf is the perfect combo of weight and range.

A couple days ago they were certain it'd be a new FE body...today it's a sports/wildlife lens. I'm not holding my breath, but I think it'd be likely that Sony will start churning out super-tele options sooner rather than later in anticipation of the summer games next year. Maybe 300/2.8 or 500/4 would be my guess. Not sure what they would've released anyway if the body thing were correct.

Is it even possible Sony could make a 500mm at 4.5-4.7 pounds?

What would be the weight savings if the front element was plastic...a lot of plastic is being used in lens elements now.

Depends if they can do what Nikon did. Their 500 pf is 1500 grams.

It's a sure thing; it's a lightweight 600/4. I waited for a long time for the 600/4 and finally broke down and coughed up $12K for the 400/2.8. The day it arrived a few weeks ago I knew the 600/4 was imminent.

I vote for 600 f/4 if they only release 1 lens. I think they need to release a 200 f/2, 300 2.8, 500 f/4 and 600 f/4 or at least announce their development. I'm a little surprised that the 300 isn't already out because of the olympics.

Having shot with the 400 GM and realizing the utility of a fast telephoto prime that works well with extenders, I can imagine a universe in which I would own both the 400 GM and 600 GM (assuming Sony introduces one). Of course, in that universe, I’d also be divorced, so there’s that.

I can only speculate but with the volume of 400's going into and out of your house, I can't imagine your wife noticing a 600. You are probably safe. And does this mean you have another 400 which you are keeping?

A risk-based edit:

"I can't imagine your potential ex-wife noticing a 600."

On topic: I'm guessing the 600/4 will be the next super-tele announcement.

Quasi-on topic questions: If Sony did produce a GM 200-600/5.6, where do you think the pricing would land? It's easy to guess on the primes- you just have to look at the competition and how Sony prices their lenses relative to that to get a good idea, but such a super-zoom with a high-quality label would be unique in the marketplace. What price would they have to hit to make it interesting to you?

If it got to 600 and was a straight 5.6, I'd think it would be more than the 100-400, maybe 3k, if it's made in Japan like that zoom. If it's a 500, and/or made in a third world country like the Nikon zoom, I'd expect it to be just G labeled, and within 500 of the Nikon's price, so under 2k

That being said, I'd rather them make a 500pf clone, not a heavy zoom

If it is a G-class, then somewhere around $2k sounds right. However, I think the Nikon was made in China. Not exactly "third world."

If it's a GM, I think you're low. I'd say somewhere closer to $5k, if not more.

I looks to be quite a lens and would certainly make sense for the smaller cameras, but I'm guessing they'll fill in the f4's before taking on slower primes.

A 500pf 5.6 clone would be insta preorder for me. $3500

A 200-600 5.6 too. $4500

A 200-500 f4 with 1.4x attached, not so much but I think it would move a lot of copies. $10,000

The Nikon is a 200-500/5.6, note it ends at 500mm not 600mm, making it considerably cheaper than what a 200-600/5.6 would be. In order to keep a super tele zoom reasonably price you need a front filter thread of max 95mn, like the Sigma and Tamron 150-600/5-6.3 lenses or Nikon 200-500/5.6.

The Sigma 150-600 Sports and the new 60-600 Sports have 105mm front filter thread. The Sigma 150-60 Contemporary has 95mm thread.
