I am also keen on a Sony long lens for wildlife. The 400mm f2.8 is just too short for bird photography and I have made that known to Sony when it was released. I was told that a longer lens would be released later this year but no idea of focal length From the discussion, I get the feeling that it may be a 500mm f4. Whatever the focal length, I just hope it will not be too expensive compared to the competition.

Hmmm, they mention both wildlife and sports? Wildlife implies 500mm or 600mm f/4 prime or 200-600mm zoom to me. Sports is more 200-400 f/4 zoom to me, or 300mm f/2.8. I suppose a 500mm f/4 could work out for both, but a bit ambiguous to me... 🤔

35mm/1.8 G. Perfect for wildlife (of the variety usually found in night clubs) and sports (such as chess).

So are we to assume that all the whiners clamoring for the 35mm 1.8 are stamp collecting, chess playing perverts?

I thought as much I hope Sony eventually brings one out just to shut em up but they will probably find some other hole to complain about like a 40mm or 65mm.

I can think of many other more compelling lenses to bring out before the 35 1.8.

Only one? Maybe need to add a second one, or a heart and/or a lung.

I don't have a caddie to carry my lenses nor do I have extra kidney to sell, so my wish would be 2.5lb or less 100-400 f5-6.3 at price similar to Tamron or Sigma

Assuming Andrea's sources called this one correctly, I'd say it's about time. Honestly, I'm a bit split about the 500 versus 600 debate. For birds, a 600mm on an a9 is very nice to have and with the weight savings of the newest glass, the 600 4 weighs only as much (or little) as the previous gen 500 4's, making them handholdable.

Then again, you can't cheat optics and the 600 4 will always be a brick to carry around, because of its length/size. In that sense a 500 4, especially one weighing as little as a 400 DO II would be the more convenient lens to move around with.

Regardless of whether it'll be a 500 or 600, I doubt that I could afford it and one probably would have to pre-order right away to avoid the waiting game we witnessed with the 400 GM.

200-400 f/4 with 1.4tc?

That actually would make the most sense if it is sports/Olympics that they really want to target. Which seemed to be the case when they marketed the A9 and 400GM.

I'm not sure I'd go for a 200-400/1.4. I owned the Canon one for many years and made good use of it but eventually stopped using it in favor of longer primes. However, the Sony would AF with another 2x stacked on the back at f/11 for 1120mm....I used my Canon a couple times like that via MF...but that may be pushing things a little too far

But I'm sure the sports world would buy up a 200-400/1.4 more than a 600/4. And if "wildlife" excludes tiny birds then that type of lens makes a lot of sense for both sports and wildlife.

I think Sony should and in fact may do something different. What about a 200-500 f4 with built in 1.4x?

That would offer something new. It would get us beyond the 400mm weíve been stuck at forever. It would sell a lot for both sports (fast enough) and wildlife (presumably ďsmallĒ enough).

It would be crazy expensive, but thatís beside the point.

Not sure where this 200-400 came to life but no way in hell would it work for the Olympics and a 1.4 is impossible to build. Seriously this is one of those big fish stories. For the Olympics they need a 200 F2 no question about it and a 600 F4 along with there 400 2.8 or donít show up.

I think he meant f4 with 1.4x built in. At least thatís what I assumed. But you know what they say about that.

I'd say its a 300 2.8 lens...badly missing for many of the sporting events. Don't know about how well this does with wildlife, I guess depending on the wildlife.

I believe Tim ( don't know his login name off the top of my head ) mentioned that the 300 2.8 lens is the most used lens in sports.

Not sure we would ever see a built in but what we may see is a new A9 at 36mpx which would give a shooter the ability to go crop mode at what 14 maybe. Or go right to the 42 and make it fast as hell for the A9 and get a 18mpx which today works quite well on the 42 sensor. They do need to think about this crop mode option as it would be huge option shooting the Olympics. I use it often on my 24 1.4 and itís very good to have as a option when needed.

Basketball mostly maybe Volleyball as well. But there 400 would be great for most other venues. But the real key to all of this for the Olympics is there staging area and where it really is to the action. They section shooters off so a lot will depend on distance thatís not moveable . Hell Iíll take a 300 2.8 in a heart beat myself or a 200 F2 in crop mode. I really need either one. The 70-200 is not cutting the mustard for me at least. Actually donít like it.

I just donít see a bigger zoom would add any value for the Olympics . I mean we have a nice 100-400 now . Slow but given the venue could work.

May be worth remembering, Guy, that both Canon and Nikon offer a built-in 1.4x with their 200-400/4 lenses (180-400 for Nikon). Lots of them on the sidelines of every major sporting event, and it is also a favorite of many wildlife photographers.

That said, I donít recall seeing a Sony patent for that type of lens. Not to say that it canít happen, though.

Wow where the heck have I been. I did not know that but honestly I have not been on a Nikon or Canon forum in years. My fault I just donít pay attention to what Iím not shooting. Iím kinda stuck on Sony. Lol

More the point whatever they build it will have Olympics as first protocol I would think.

You still can't cheat the front element diameter that would be 178mm. The 600/4 is 150mm...largest in current production.
Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 gives you an idea of the front element. Of course Fresnel design would reduce length and weight...it would be nothing like the Sigma but the front element would be huge so a thick lens unlikely to fit in any current backpack other than the dedicated single lens supertele ones.

I still love that Juza handheld that, lol

I'd love a 200 f2 or 300 2.8. Or a 200-600, but I worry about the weight. Same with the 500 f4. Howmuch do you guys estimate the 200-600 or 500 f4 would weigh?
