I use 32s and 16s like Rich, and for the same reason, I carry 9 of them. I just switched out three cards (3 cameras) after shooting a lot of once in a lifetime material.
In addition to the 8 cards that I carry in the hard sided memory case, I also have one loaded in each of my 3 cameras. That brings me to a total of 11 cards that I am using.

With that much complexity, you are bound to lose one or more cards. Workflow is fiddly.
Instead, live by simple rules and offload within 72 hours of shooting.
Not only is your setup complex, but you're introducing more mechanical wear into your setup. You'll likely break a card or misplace before running into corruption issues.

I have three 64GB cards I rotate in Slot 1 and one 256GB card that sits in Slot 2. I save RAWs to both and have not had issues to date with the slowed writing.
Day to day, I leave the 256GB card in until nearly full then format in the camera.
On vacation, I take the 256 out when nearly full and back it up directly onto a portable drive with SD slot built in. The 64gb cards get loaded to the MacBook directly.

At this point, I am not shooting as often as I might. But, I hope that changes. I have never had a Sandisk card fail. But, I take care in loading, removing, and offloading the cards. I try to download a card each day if possible. If not, when away from my laptop it will be longer. When a card is filled or switched, I put it back into the Lowepro hard sided memory card case faced upside down so that I know that the card has been used. In the hard sided case as long as opposing openings in the case are filled, the cards stay in place even if the case is dropped. I have a total of 5 16 GB cards that are shared between the stock and Kolari V3 modded A7r cameras and 5 32 GB and 1 64 GB cards used for the A7rIII.

I use 256 gB slower (90 mB/sec write) cards so that when I convert them to DNG files for my ancient software (CS6/ACR) I can process the DNG files from the same card as the ARWs.
i use cs5/acr, but download the cards to my local drive prior to DNG conversion. why do you write your DNGs and process off the card?

i'd prefer to have a card size that are big enough for a full day and mirror that in slot 2.
typically download when i wanna do a PP session. but when on vacation i download daily.
it'd be appalling to have to download/process/store more than 32gb of files per day. (i get it that some people have different needs.)
also i can't be bothered to sort through 8 spare cards tossing around in my kit bag, guessing what's empty/full in the field and then again at the end of the day.
so far i've been getting by with 2x32gb. there was extended 1 vacation where i needed more but that was once several years. there's a small nagging sense that 2x64gb cards wouldn't provide piece of mind in terms of extra space when required, but cards were like double the price back when i bought them a few years ago.
have always had SanDisk CF or SD cards. have never had a card fail.

I use 128 GB singles in a7R2, with 64 GBs as backup in bag. I prefer larger cards for speed and never get close to filling before uploading to computer. a7R has 32 GB, but doesn't see much use these days.

in my 2 A7rIII's I have 32gb in slot 1 and 64gb in slot 2 (back up). As someone who grew up shooting film I have never been one for 'machine gunning' it so even when shooting an event I will rarely go above a few hundred images so this is more than enough for me

Thanks for all the input. I just ordered a Lexar UHS-II 64GB card to see how it performs. If it does well, I will buy 128GB versions. Reviews on Amazon were very favorable.
V60 is the rating, am unsure if I will benefit from that speed, but oh well. I will have my older SanDisk cards with me as well

I'm not sure that using a larger card means that you're going to lose it. If the money's not an issue and if there's no difference in reliability, then you can always pull a card long before it's full, but if you need it you have it.

I've never heard good things about Lexar......
Only one I had fail was Lexar.
Only Sandisk for me.
We will see lol. They had some of the better speed tests on the A7r3 and A9. Will have back ups. Watch, I will come across a pack of wolves at Yellowstone with amazing conditions, and the card fail on me

I've shot digital for 13 years and had 2 card failures, both have been Sandisk. Today, 90% of my cards are....
....Sandisk. Maybe I'm mistaken but I figure the likelihood of failure is so remote that the differences between brands don't amount to much, so I never held it against the company. I've just always bought Sandisk; inertia keeps taking me back. The Lexar deals look good, though, so I might grab some for my upcoming road trip.

I try NOT to change cards in the middle of the day and try always to download whatever I shot at the end of the day. The cards never leave the camera except in the safety of my home or hotel room. Those cards are are soooo small and easy to lose even though I have a nice case for them. When traveling, each evening I download to my laptop AND two drives, one of which stays with me in the camera pack (SSD), one at the motel, hidden. As someone else said, there's no rule that says you need to fill the card before download. It's unusual for me to fill a 128GB card (with mirrored backup in the camera) even on an extended vacation and I shoot uncompressed raw in an A7RIII.

I use 32gb a lot, and have 4-16gb SD cards I use, as well. I get over 1000 pictures on a 32gb card, plus 32gb is the biggest XP machines can use, afaik, and I still use old machines quite a bit.
1000 photos is my semi-arbitrary not particularly strict cut-off for cards. Although I got about 3000, (many were jpegs raw closer to 2000) on a 64gb on vacation last year, and over 1500 over a few days on the 32gb I was using yesterday.
Even 4 gb is about the same shooting raw now as jpegs on my XT back in 2005. About 140 RAW now, I think about 150 jpegs on 512MB back then. And that seemed amazing, 150 photos, empty & re-shoot. Even 4gb is better than nothing if your other card(s) are full. Probably get at least 50-70 on a 5DsR, and that's 60-70mb files, I think.
The cheapest per gig I think maybe 128gb, or maybe 64 to even 200, 256 isn't bad. About the same price per gig.
I have cards that I have used for years but others have failed, eventually. The cheap no-name have failed faster imo. You can't expect infinity. Plus there's loss if you drop/lose camera. Happened to me recently lost an almost full 32gb in the camera that is gone
