p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · B&W Conversion

After struggling with the color version of this image I tried a B&W conversion, and finally this conversion gave me the mood I was looking for.

It made me realize that while a Black-and-white photograph may look simpler, the mood of the photo is more intense making it more emotional.

I believe the absence of color allows concentrating on the subject without any distracting elements which I tried to eliminate in the color version. Without color, the eye and mind immediately see the components, subject, mood.

What do you think?

Socrate, beautiful photo! The mood is perfectly conveyed.
Agree 100% with the thought-process of B/W, its something that I use myself when I feel that color is creating clutter. Minus the color, the lines and shapes take prominence.

Converting to mono can do a great job of 'calming' an otherwise busy scene!

I like what you've got here, Socrate. I think the toning is *nearly* there - I think it should use a little more massaging to catch that right 'dusty' feeling. Did you add additional blurring here? If so, I think that you could probably get slightly less aggressive and still maintain the isolation you're looking for.

Excellent image, processing, with appropriate style and toning to match.
One nit, at least to me: I think the fade/negative vignette, whatever you did is a bit too strong over the foreground hoof, left image. I suppose it conveys walking the dusty trail, but the transition is stronger there and lower leg than elsewhere.

Thank you Jeff and thank you, Scott. I appreciate the comments and the critique. That is what I wanted to hear. I will play a bit more with the image trying to follow your directions.
