I just said the same thing at Photorumors. Has me worried they wouldn't want to show it off wide open.

The prototyoe lens was already available for demo at CP+ where people could shoot it wide open as they liked. I did as well and it was certainly very sharp already at f1.4 for close range at least. Can't say much about corner to corner at f1.4 at I infinity though. I didn't test it very long or extensively at that time as I was more into testing the 75/1.5 and the demo area was not well suited for WA shots.

I think their demo samples are quite often some travel photos and there are just a few, can't draw too many conclusions about them.

Why are lenses for slrs/milc and RF so big? Compare this to 35mm lenses of similar speed and they 20-25mm are twice the length? Mainly asking for aps-c cameras like when comparing a Fuji x100 23mm lens to a xpro 23mm lens- and this lens here. Is it that in a fixed lens camera you can engineer the optics more efficiently? Is it that this lens is made for FF coverage and that is a big issue at these wider focal lengths?

I like my x100t , but I really miss scale focusing when off the viewfinder. If I go to a xpro,I will lose a lot of compactness.

Timing matters in lens releases. CV has large gaps to fill post-50mm, non-macro, plus a dedicated 35mm with modern design. Wide angles of high quality and various speeds are everywhere in E mount, spoilt for choice. 560g works against this one, as does size and FL for a f1.4.

Bluntly, in mid 2019, it's a missed opportunity to build on the positive response to their existing E range. They can bring a lot to 75mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm and 180mm in their build and ergo style, for general, travel and portrait work. We can still wish them well with this very clearly narrow focus niche offering. (I feel the M heritage and its short FL RF emphasis is working against them somewhat.)

Anyone care to predict how this one might compare against the Loxia 21. I just ordered a Loxia 21 a day before the announced release of this CV 1.4 and am now having my doubts. Thinking of doing some astro where 2 stops is huge if the quality is there.

Thanks,
gb.

I will compare them side by side as soon as I get my review copy.

Really interested in this lens. I love my Loxia 21 to bits but not for Astro - the vignette wide open is so strong plus the field curvature can be problematic if trying to include foreground as well. I would expect this lens to perform fairly unremarkably in terms of coma, vignette and border resolution wide open but if you can see marked improvement by stopping down to even say f2 it might make a compelling Astro alternative to the Loxia.

I’d never sell my Lox but if this lens delivers I’d potentially add it to my collection.

Notwithstanding my love for CV E Mount glass, I think I will pass on this.
Its weakness is already clear before any performance test...it's too close to the 24 GM.
Voigtlander should have made a fast 15mm instead as there is no much offer in that range.

I've seen some impressing photos with the Leica 21/1.4 Summilux when it comes to creating separation between the main subject and the background at close/mid range so as a more documentary style lens and for low light photography I find this announcement very interesting.

Since Voigtländer has announced adapters for Sony E mount lenses on Nikon Z cameras I assume we will not see this or any other E mount lens in Z mount (at least not any time soon) so I'm waiting for both the adapters and some reviews of this lens.

On their web page they advertise as a lens for creative wide-angle shooting utilizing background blur, highlighting the floating mechanism as well:

"We realize amazing large aperture F 1.4 as 21mm lens. In addition to the dynamic perspective effect peculiar to super wide-angle lenses, it is a creative lens that can expand the width of photographic expression by making use of blur. The floating mechanism provides excellent image quality from a short distance to a distant view."

I did decide to get one after all, made a pre-booking this weekend and traded in a couple of 50mm lenses (I had too much duplication at 50mm after getting the 50/1.2 CV) to make it less costly.

I hope next they address 28mm. I have the 7 Artisans 28 f/1.4, which is very nice, but I would love a CV 28 f/1.4 Nokton which I expect would be even better.

28mm is definitely underrepresented as there is only one offering from Voigtländer compared to many different versions of 21mm, 35mm and 50mm that Voigtländer currently is offering.

Personally I would like to see compact 28mm (something similar to 35mm 2.0 ultron) as old LTM Voigtländer 28mm 3.5 prices have gone insane. Come to think of at the moment Leica 28mm 2.8 ASPH and Summaron 5.6 are the only compact lens options for digital M bodies.

Well there is the Laowa 15mm f/2, that is quite nice.

I agree a very small light 28 would be very nice too. The Leica M 28 f/2.8 Asph, however, does fill that role pretty nicely and used is actually pretty reasonably priced--for a Leica . I would be happy if Voigtlander could make a lens close to that quality for let's say $700, and I think they would sell a bunch of those.

I think pre-orders are open for the CV 21mm, f1.4 at B&H and Adorama?

Anyone know of any deals or specials available for this lens??

Pre-ordered. If it's sharp wide open with manageable CA, then we got another lens that can mimic MF atmosphere. Really a nice time to be alive for all the wide-angle junkies in the age of mirrorless. Now if only Sony made a god-tier 21mm 1.2 GM by 2021...

It's priced much more attractively in the US. Japan market price is quite high in comparison. I guess the pricing is set in a way to compete with Sony 24/1.4 GM which is also priced much lower in the US vs. Japan. CV 21/1.4 seems to be priced around $300 USD below 24/1.4 GM in both markets.

Open post to Cosina: Do a 28mm of the same general design and performance as the 21/3.5, same aperture, it would sell in large numbers. You went with f3.5 and f1.4 at 21mm, now let's see a redux at 28mm, one of each.

Do this through the range - 35mm, modernise the super sharp 50mm f3.5 and give us an 85mm and 180mm too at the same unfashionable speed. You've done the macro lenses, now do the infinity lenses.

We all know it's possible, we all know it can be done fast, slow lenses are low aberration lenses, easy designs, Zeiss agrees. Of course your fast offerings will miss out on some sales and overall profit per unit will fall but volumes would rise along with your reputation.

For many, fast works best for cars and tax returns; and balanced lens ranges. Do one slow lens for each fast lens. Do it for your base.
