I had another thread wishing for a remote that could help me fine tune manual focus for tripod work like shooting the moon. Do you think this remote is a good option for that? I need to be able to adjust focus without touching the camera.

I think that should work well. Based on some testing did earlier it takes about three clicks to cover the DOF. The camera seems to adjust for focal length and aperture. In any case, you could adjust the focus using the buttons and figure out how many clicks were needed between acceptable focus on both ends (near/far). Then refocus half the clicks from one of the end points to arrive at a perfect middle.

if sony's done one thing right, it's this remote. Instant trouble free bluetooth connection, doubles as a tally light for video recording. I wish they could have made with a switch for multiple connections, sometimes I use another body, which cant use the remote, and it's bothersome not having said remote.

For sure. I love that it's always enabled. Meaning, I never have to turn it on or off. If the camera's on, the remote is connected. A quick swipe on the remote to unlock and it's good to go.

Did anyone confirm that this remote works with the A9 with v6 firmware? I still see current reports that it does not work with the A9 even though the firmware update was released months ago. Both the Sony site and B&H say that it needs a firmware update that is to be released in the summer of 2019. It is well past the summer of 2019 and the firmware was released. Does it work? Are the current reports that it does not work with the A9 from users that haven't updated?

It works with the firmware update, according to the online HelpGuide for the a9 with v5 firmware -

Assuming turning on Airplane Mode (AP) saves the same amount of camera battery power as turning off Bluetooth or the remote in the menus, AP seems to be the way to go. AP maintains the pairing settings so the remote just starts working when AP is turned off. Turning Bluetooth or the remote off in the menu requires a re-pair.
Then again, anyone know if turning the remote off in menu saves any remote battery drain?

Indeed, use it with my A9, but sadly, only pairs with one camera, would be much better if it had multi support.

I just noticed this comment on YouTube regarding using the focus buttons with this remote. Can anyone confirm this?

"I've purchased this remote in the hope that I'd be able to focus stack without touching the camera. Unfortunately this isn't the case with the Zeiss 16-35mm F4. Focus shifts from 1m to infinity with a single tap of the plus button. Occasionally it will go to 9m, but this will take multiple attempts (going back and forth in the hope of it responding with greater granularity). In stark contrast the 85mm 1.8FE takes an eternity to get from 1m to infinity

I just bought the remote and tested that specific lens. The remote has multiple stops between 1m and infinity. See here

Distances are what's reported by ExifTool.

But as far as I can tell the amount of focus change is dependent on how long you hit the button. A quick tap does not move it focus forward by a consistent amount. So if your tap is a little longer, then the focus will move more. It's possible to go over infinity and have everything blurry.

Does anyone know if using this remote gets in the way of the BT location linkage with your smartphone? I imagine so since you have to turn on the Bluetooth Remote option, but figured someone here could confirm.

If you started at near point and keep hitting the + button 3 times for each exposure how do you know when you are at infinity? Is one relying on the LCD view to confirm each step or just the last step? ? To make sure infinity is in focus it seems best to me to start at infinity and click the - button until one completes the bracketing sweep.

Are you guys saying that it won't work with 2 different models of a Sony camera-only one?

I have AF-On mapped to Play function (I like to chimp a lot and prefer this location over the bottom one mainly because next click on the same button zooms).
So with RMT-P1BT it works too so I can press AF-On on the remote once and it invokes Play function, then press it again to zoom on the image so I have better idea if focus has reached where I want it, then half-press shutter on the remote to cancel Play mode. This all works without touching the camera.
