I received my RMT-P1BT today. It is easy to pair to the A7RIII if you follow the included directions. My main interest in this remote is to assist in Stacking. The good news is that the focus adjust buttons seem to be tied to the aperture being used. The more you stop down the more the focus changes with each press of the +/- button. My initial tests show that about 5 presses of the +/- will adjust focus about the right amount for each slice of a stack. I will be testing much more soon.

Interesting. Please keep us informed of your tests. And thank you.

Ok, I just did some more testing. Using the Sony 90 macro I did tests at f2.8 and F5.6. In both cases adjusting focus by 3 presses on the focus + button yielded focus brackets with the depth of field covering the focus change at both apertures. So the procedure for stacking is as follows:

  1. Put camera in Manual focus mode
  2. Focus on nearest point for the stack
  3. Expose photo with remote
  4. Press + button 3 times (or - if stacking from far end first)
  5. keep taking pictures till you have the furthest point in focus

You can move the focus magnifier around after you adjust focus to visually confirm when you have taken enough.

I'd still far prefer built in focus bracketing but this is a vast improvement over manually trying to adjust focus with lens ring like I was before.

I'll try to post some samples tomorrow.

Once you've paired it the first time does it quickly connect automatically every time you turn it on after that, or do you have to dig through the menus and connect to it each time you want to use it?

Samples taken with Sony 90mm Macro on the A7RIII at ISO 100. Smaller steps were @ F2.8, Larger steps @ F11. In both cases I hit the + button 3 times between photos. It appears to me that it is reliable that 3 clicks will move the proper amount regardless of aperture selected. If you prefer more layers in stacking 1 or 2 clicks could be used.

Sean

First of Sequence, F2.8

Second @ F2.8, 3 clicks beyond focus of first shot.

Third @ F2.8, 3 clicks beyond focus of prior shot.

Fourth @ F2.8, 3 clicks beyond focus of prior shot.

Fifth @ F2.8, 3 clicks beyond focus of prior shot.

First @ F11

Second @ F11, 3 clicks beyond focus of prior shot.

Third @ F11, 3 clicks beyond focus of prior shot.

Sadly, remote does not work with the A9, contrary to specs. Need firmware 6.0 to make it work, the bluetooth remote option does not exist on the A9.......

I have it pre-ordered but may need to cancel if it doesn't work with the A9.

That is disturbing. Just received mine yesterday.

Network setting page 3
"Bluetooth Rmt Ctrl" needs to be turned "On"

that option is nowhere to be found on the A9, if that's your only late model camera, might as well return it. I use this on the R3 and was wanting to try on the A9, but I could not pair, and could not find that option. Another limitation is that it's a bluetooth device, and has a 1:1 pairing. To work with multiple devices, you need to pair each time, so it's a hassle. If you only intend to use with one device, it works wonderfully.

How do we know that it can be used after the next A9 firmware update?

https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/accessories/compatibility.php?area=us&lang=en&mdl=RMT-P1BT&cat=3&loc=en_US hope the link works, but it should show the attached image and issues

it certainly wont work with this version of the firmware. From the remote instructions:

Connecting the Remote
Commander and a camera with
the Bluetooth® function
• The following is an example of a procedure for Sony
Interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras and Sony digital still
cameras. For detailed procedures, refer to the Help Guide.
• Before you start, check that the Remote Commander’s LOCK
switch is in the position to the opposite of “LOCK.”
1 On the camera, select MENU
(network)  [Bluetooth Settings] 
[Bluetooth Function]  [On].
2 On the camera, select MENU
(network)  [Bluetooth Rmt Ctrl] 
[On].
3 On the camera, select MENU
(network)  [Bluetooth Settings] 
[Pairing].
4 On the Remote Commander, press and
hold the Shutter-release/REC button and
the + side of the Focus/Zoom button at
the same time for at least 7 seconds.
5 When a confirmation message appears
on the camera's screen, select [OK].
• appears and pairing begins.
• When pairing is complete, [Paired.] appears.
Note
• If pairing fails, the Remote Commander's indicator flashes
rapidly. If this happens, redo the procedure from the beginning.
• In the following situations, pair the Remote Commander and
the camera again.
– When using the Remote Commander to operate a different
camera (After having connected the Remote Commander
with a different camera, you also must pair the Remote
Commander and the original camera again when connecting
to the original camera.)
– When the camera's network settings have been reset
• If the Remote Commander is not used for a period of time
during a Bluetooth connection, (no Bluetooth connection)
may appear on the camera’s screen.

note step 2, that option does not exist on the A9, however that menu item has plenty of space for more options.

it's not very clear, but if you dig into sony's documentation, you can see, it wont work.... of course I just read the press release and ordered, however luckily for me, my intent was the R3.

Just got mine and at first thought the focus buttons were defective. I was set to manual focus, as required, but the buttons did nothing. But it turns out switching to manual focus using the switch on the lens, or toggling to manual focus as I typically do with a custom button, doesn't do it; you have to actually switch the camera focus mode to manual using the menus. Once I did that, it works like a charm.

For A9, it will be usable with FW6.0 to be released this summer. I found this notice in italian Sony website too.

I did test shot today with the A7RIII and the Sony 90 macro. This shot was a composite in Zerene Stacker of 16 images at f5.6. I used three button presses of the + button between each shot. There was a touch of breeze at times so the nice thing about using manual release instead of automated bracketing is I could pause when the flower was moving.

Full size can be found on: Smugmug

Thank you for posting and great shot. It is great that focus can be adjusted in such small increments using the Bluetooth remote. Have you tried to focus stack landscape shots? I assume that you would need a lot of button pushes to move the focus point enough for a landscape stack.
