One of the highlights from our recent trip to Maui was a chance to shoot some rare endemic Hawaiian birds - in particular the stunning I'iwi. Thanks to Ryan a.k.a. KingOfKings for the tip on the site , at high elevation on the slopes of Haleakala. It did not disappoint. I went up twice and had good light on the second day, at the price of getting soaked by a constant mist. In addition to their spectacular plumage these birds have a beautiful call, which I won't attempt to describe. It was one of the more memorable shooting days I've had in a while.

I agree with KD that 4 is the best for the nice clean background Tim. I'm wondering why you did not darken the bright spots in the backgrounds on some of the others. Great feather detail and control of he red channel.

I'm hoping you enjoyed the stunning scenery on Haleakala, particular the rift zone from both the top and side and also hiked into it.

Thanks for the comments. Interesting that #4 seems to be the consensus pick of the litter. But yes, it does lack the brighter BG areas present in the other images. For my part I didn't find them particularly bothersome so I didn't tone them down, but I may take a whack at that now you mention it thanks Morris.

We did get up to the top of the crater, but didn't hike down/into it. Here's a view:

Yes, I saw an apapane, and got a bit of a shot of it, but nothing I'd consider posting here. Thanks again for the tip...the site did not disappoint. Wish I could have spent more time there. Tim.
