As an old-time nifty-fifty lover I welcome this new "close enough" addition. If the rendering is pleasant enough, I will be adding it as a nice lightweight autofocusing walkaround lens. Just sold my FE 85mm f/1.8 since I'm replacing it with the Sammy's 85/1.4. Wouldn't mind another wider Samyang to accompany it. The FE55 would be a bit too close to 85 for my taste, so this could be a better companion. And it's small and light enough to justify it's place alongside my CV40/1.2.
I really, really wish they had added some dort of weather sealing, like they did with the 85. Would have been nice to have. But not a deal breaker if there's none....Show more →
What Sony needs to do is to complete the series of f/1.8 mid-priced primes.
We have excellent 85mm/1.8 and 55mm/1.8 is already a sort of classic (albeit a little pricey). I own and like both of these. But in the wider end there is nothing but a few mixed primes!!?? 35mm/2.8 is much better than its reputation, but it is a speciality lens being so small and only f/2.8 (and the list price is ridiculous). I have also tried 28mm/2, a lens which I think bought from you. First I thought it was a bad copy, but later learned that the huge distortion and strange focus plane are just part of the package. So no hard feelings
What Sony should do is to - finally - introduce the long waited 35mm/1.8. Additionally there should be 24/20mm prime in the series. Both of these lenses should be in line with 85mm/1.8 and 55mm/1.8 quality - nice bokeh and sharp enough for high resolution sensors. Price 50% of equivalent GMs and also a little less than Batis series.
Samyang 45mm/1.8? It is just an example of the company taking advantage of the gaps Sony have left open. Not really a tempting lens to buy, and not even a substitute to the 35mm/1.8, but sure it will sell well given the current situation of FE primes.
