I don't have the Batis 40/2 anymore but in my opinion, OOF rendering is not very smooth. The Batis differential is the high contrast (nice 3D), vivid colors and close-focus ability.
I don't think the Samyang renders any better, especially off-axis. The FE 50/1.4 ZA's rendering is smoother and lower in contrast compared to the Samyang and Batis but still can't match the Voigtlander 50/1.2's rendering. (or 40/1.2) (Link)

Here is a side-by-side comparison between the Samyang 45/1.8 vs FE 50/1.4 ZA @f/1.8. (Warning, this is a torture test)
The latter produces much smoother rendering in comparison. (especially off-axis)
The OOF area is

Thanks Fred
Good info. I already have the Batis so I'll probably stick with that. Just wish it was smaller. I'm keeping an eye on this Sony 35mm 1.8 rumor. Believe it when I see it

The Samyang 45 may not win in rendering or build quality but it's very small and light as a feather. If I had to choose between the FE 35/2.8 ZA and the new Samyang, I think I would go with the latter.

Probably a return that was returned without the hood?

You didn't pony up cost, but you did pony up time and aggravation. And what does the seller do with the return? Sell it as an open box to someone who will also now go through the same issue? Return it to Sony to be fixed? There is always some kind of cost for QA issues.

So what's your point?
Plenty of people buy lenses then return them if they're decentred or tilted.
Yes I spent time testing and aggravation returning the lens, but that's what you have to do nowadays if you want a good copy of a lens.
My concern is primarily for me not the seller, they can send it back to their suppliers or they can sell it open box. That's up to them. I buy a lens in good faith that it's not decentred or tilted.

Corner to corner sharpness is good, from f/1.8
Ouf of focus rendering can be harsh depending on the background.
I haven't seen an issue with the AF but I tested mostly in AF-C. Face and eye AF seem to be fine.

I'm really annoyed the lens hood is missing. Will initiate the return to Adorama

Here are some examples, all f/1.8 ...

You commented that you didn't have to pony up anything extra for QA. Did you have to pay for shipping back to the seller? You had to spend time testing and returning and reordering and retesting a replacement. Time is money, as the old saying goes and reading about people going through 5 copies of a lens like the Sony 35 f/1.4 before they got a good copy is just nuts to me.

The return isn't your concern but it will affect somebody either through the seller returning it to Sony (costing both of them time and money) or some other person buying an open box bad copy and either living with it or repeating what you did. The point I was attempting to make was that better QA may save a lot of people time and money. But it does come at a cost and we'd have to pay more for a lens with better QA or settle for playing the lens lottery.

"I'm really annoyed the lens hood is missing. Will initiate the return to Adorama "

The hood is ugly and I'm skeptical about its effectiveness.
If you are happy with your lens copy, wouldn't it make more sens to keep the lens, buying a 5$ hood, send a small complain letter to Adorama asking them for a small commercial gesture?

Agreed. If the lens copy is good why risk sending it back and getting a crappy copy. I never use any of the factory hoods anymore (except in poor weather on long lenses). Guy got me hooked on these small screw on metal hoods that I use all the time. They are really nice because they protect the lens and are only about as thick as the lens cap. They also do a good job of keeping the lens cap from popping off.

So the conclusion for me is this: sharpness is definitely good , it’s super light , AF fast enough , but the overall rendering is not better than my Tamron 28-75. I was more looking for a special lens, not a travel lens. I like using the Tamron + CV 21mm f3.5 when traveling.
I feel like I should really get the 1.4 ZA or CV 50 1.2. The Sony 1.4 would be a lot easier to use for portraits and I keep reading it’s the best 50mm with AF currently on the planet ! I also really like the smooth rendering of the CV 50 pictures I have seen. The CV 21mm is a joy to use in manual but I may struggle with anything moving with the CV 50mm.
I’m going to rent the 1.4 ZA to see how I like it first.

I do have similar thoughts. Maybe I go manual for the 50mm to have a kind of special lens with special bokeh/rendering.

Looks like they complement each other very well.
Do you have a good rate of pictures in focus with the CV 50 ? do you take portraits too ?

Manual focus on the CV50 is quite nice with really nice feel. That can be said for the50 1.4 as well. It’s a tough call between them. The Rokinon I agree with most folks . Rendering is a little rough and manual focus is fly by wire . But big differences in lens build. I think you kinda have to have both in a way. Have different purposes

Finally got around testing mine that was delivered from Adorama earlier this week. In my initial testing, I don't see any issue with infinity focusing. Tried focusing on top of a light pole far away wide open and it focused with out an issue.

AF seems fine but not lightening fast as some of the other native lenses but seems quite accurate.

Now the bad part, the dock that came with the lens is broken. Looks like they forgot to glue it at the factory because as soon as I took it out of the box, it split into two pieces. Contact Adorama and they will be shipping a new dock to me. So will see if I need to update the firmware or not.

From the initial testing, it looks like a perfect walk around lens....just the right size, weight, FL and aperture. I used 35/2.8 and 55/1.8 before and never liked either as one lens solution.

It looks like a good walk around lens, and would pair up nicely with the 24/2.8. However, if I were in the market for this lens, I'd have a hard time paying MSRP for it when their US sales tactic appears to be to give substantial discounts six to eight months after the release. Patience will pay off if it's not an immediate need.
