Hard to answer since I only had the Batis for a couple of days => the eye af didn't work properly, that's why I sent it back.
And: I just got the Samyang and only took a few shots, to early for a final verdict. However (), right now I'm glad that the Batis showed the problems mentioned since I saved a lot of money and the Samyang seems to be exactly what I was looking for. Light, small, (very?) good image quality. It's true, I would prefer 40mm since it offers more versatility. And also true,

I took a trip a few years ago and used only the Contax G 45/2 and really enjoyed it. I have two children and it was a great focal length for people, animals, scenery, everything.

I was just in Portugal with the 24/1.4 GM and it was fantastic (beautiful country), but I would have really liked a small 45 to pair with it. I think that would be just about perfect!

I look forward to seeing what you capture with the Samyang on your trip!

Thanks for the info
It’s weird some people have the issue and some others don’t.
I’m tempted to order from Adorama or BH so I can easily return if AF doesn’t work well

I ordered mine from Adorama. Not sure most saw these tests I did . I did not run into a infinity issue. But this may help

I ordered the kit with the lens station from Adorama today. Should be able to test it end of the week.

Okay hold the telephone

Okay just pulled out my dock and updated my 85 1.4 it is version .4 now

More important now my lens tested good but I put my 45 on and there is no firmware but I did check my AF setting and it was -3. Very odd

Maybe this is the infinity issue.

If you have the dock check your 45mm AF settings and post what your settings are especially those having infinity issue

I reset mine back to 0 and just tried infinity and still looks good

That's odd. My Rokinon 35 1.4 came with a +1. I'll have to plug in my 45 to check the offset. Will report back.

My copy also has a problem with the af at infinity. Funny, I was one of the early adopters for the Batis 40mm and had to send it back due to the eye-af focus issue. Now the Samyang will go back.
Technical progress seems not to be the case anymore since manufacturers seem to struggle with the task of manufacturing a 40/45mm lens that actually works...

Some photos that demonstrate the problem: EDIT: link deleted.

I’m thinking about ordering one from Adorama. Kind of weary since there seems to be a lot of lemons out there. Can anyone list the issues I should check for and the best way to test for those issues?

Mine doesn't seem to have the issue, lens station showing AF at -1.

Shouldn't they all be the same AF setting out of the box?

You would think so. Mine was -3.

It's really a shame I liked it a lot, but as you can see in my pictures, it's not sharp at infinity in every single shot compared to the manual focus shot.
So it will go back.

Sounds like they must test every lens and set the value based on what their testing found - whatever that is.

I'm undecided as far as if I should send mine back..
would be great to see if the people with the dock can make things better by fiddling with the setting... or if it actually makes things worse

I sent mine back, just got my refund yesterday (minus return shipping cost).
I then purchased a brand new Zony 55mm for an extra $300, then tested it only to find it decentred/tilted. Why the hell can't these manufacturers test their bloody lenses before the ship them out

Getting a replacement in the next couple of days.

Seriously. Amazing that the Zeiss name doesn't buy a properly centered lens!

I worked in an industry where we built out own sensors ( camera, lasers, LED's all in a box ). We spent a lot of effort and cost ensuring everything was properly aligned and every sensor we shipped out was as perfect as we could possibly get it.

Now the catch...these sensors cost $30,000. If you are willing to pony up the cost of the extra QA required to ensure every lens going out of the plant is perfect...then I'm sure the manufacturer will oblige. Big problem is...no one will pony up to the cost.
