Pre-order: Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM ($2,699)
Canon has officially announced the RF 85mm F1.2L USM and claims it offers the highest resolution of any Canon lens launched to date.

According to Canon, the RF 85mm F1.2L USM is the ideal focal length for portraits and a flattering perspective for faces. It's the only the second lens in Canon’s line-up, after the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM, to use Canon’s unique BR optic technology, which is claimed to effectively correct axial chromatic aberration that is not completely correctable with a combination of traditional glass lenses. Aspherical and UD lens elements are said to reduce lens aberrations enabling stunning optical performance.

The MTF’s look superb but they’d have to be for that price.

They actually have an ok plan IMO
Sure, I wish they had a 5d level Eos Rx out right now.
But I thought about it, if I were canon I don't know if I would have done it any other way.

1. Canon folks are all about that glASS*
Let’s face it, canon bodies do not have sensors that rival sony or Nikon with DR, they don't shoot more FPS. But the glass.
So why not continue to draw people in with glass?

2. Why would Canon put out a pro ML body now, when they don’t have it all figured out yet. They gave us a consumer ML body that is ok. And this allows them to bake the Rx body in the oven for another 12 months, so it’s fully cooked.
If the pro body came out first, it was priced like a Nikon Z at launch (over 3k), and was just "ok", you would have a BIG tummy ache right?
Improve EYE AF so that it works beyond 5' on the RF 50L.
Get a better sensor
Get dual card slots
Get that touch bar out of here and give me a joy stick.
FULLY COOK IT!
Say NO to the microwaved bodies!

3. See number one

Shame on Canon and Nikon for taking a beating and a kick in the pants from Sony, to take ML seriously.
Shame on them.
Canon and Nikon should have been ahead of the curve. Not the new guy.

Ignoring the optics etc, I’m loving the design of these RF L series lenses, very aesthetically pleasing.

Wow, what a spectacular lens buffet Canon is rolling for the R mount! Now if only we could get a 200MP R body with a super high DR :-)

PS: This lens is heavier than its EF sibling (85L f/1.2 II).

As a Canon user you end up with a big tummy ache anyways. No pro body means I'm not wasting money on RF lenses. They look wonderful but with no 1DR I'm not going to fork over $10K on 2.8 RF zooms. Canon needs both for me to commit. Sadly, the 1DR looks to be years away.

Oh man, that is the kind of lens that could make me add some Canon gear back into the mix.

FWIW, the DOF does change as well with the use of an apodization element, not just the T-value. But heck, with f/1.2, the DS will be a true bokeh king that can be shot in any situation. Looking forward to see what kind of T-stop rating they have for this. The Fuji implementation is not that good. Should do it like Sony with a stronger apodization.

Because of course it is. Not like reducing weight is a priority. What is surprising is that Canon managed to make a lens that is both heavy and ludicrously expensive. Nearly a thousand dollars more for the R version of this? Over a thousand dollars more than the Sony GM version or the Nikon version? $1500 more than the Sigma version? They outta their minds.

Fantastic specs but that price tag is an insult, considering longtime canon users and their very well known investment in glass and then considering the CAMERA ITSELF FALLS BEHIND NIKON AND SONY, very upsetting.

You can shrug and say don’t buy it then but being mature about it it’s clear canon is being greedy here and it’s going to hurt their bottom line.

Although I’d also like to be wrong because I loved my canon 60d and my new 5d iv as well as my lenses, I hope Canon can profit but I also demand innovation because if they cannot and ML truly is the future then brand loyalty isn’t going to serve them well

That aspect of mirrorless is dispiriting. I was hoping that a transition to Canon mirrorless would result in a reduction in system weight - if not dramatic at least enough to give shoulders some relief. Instead things are becoming more ponderous.
