Because of the range of size of subject, and the likely variation in shooting distance, a zoom would be good, maybe a 100-400mm.

I think doth these lenses would be good for dragons. For butterflies I would like to have something lighter. Keep new ideas coming.

If you are OK with legacy manual lenses, the Kiron 105mm is very good. A matched TC behind it, when needed, cam make it more versatile.

I would think the smooth and creamy background created by the Sony 100mm 2.8/5.6 STF GM would enhance butterflies quite well.

+1 but I think the 300mm f4 without the TC.

Dragonflies in flight are tough. This is with the previous 300mm f4 AF-S and a D7000. I could not do it with the 70-300mm zoom For butterflies the zoom worked fine. I am reading good things about the 100-400mm Sigma.

I have found 300mm to be close to the sweet spot for crop sensors.
