How well does this lens obtain focus with the new firmware? Thinking about trying it since I like their new 85.

I updated my Samyang 35/1.4 to firmware v04 and it tracks much better in video mode.
For photography, I still get some misses but it's way better than firmware v01. Still not in the same level of accuracy as the newer 85/1.4. Manual focus is also not as nice compared to the 85mm.

I find the Samyang 35/1.4 a marvel optically beating all other lenses I've tried including the Sony FE 35/1.4 ZA, CV 40/1.2 and other adapted lenses like CV 35/1.7 and ZM 35/1.4.

Rendering is also very pleasant but the Sony FE 35/1.4 is a tad smoother being less corrected for SA.

I have mine on the B&S boards, and it's 1000% due to the obscene size of the lens. I'de be in hog heaven if it could shave off 300g, even 200g, I'de be very happy.

I thought about trying the Sigma 40/1.4 E-mount but its weight puts me off. It's not much lighter than my 100-400 GM!

I'm sure it's amazing optically as well.

It's similar to the FE 35/1.4 ZA in weight and size. You probably would hate the Sigma 40/1.4 at more than twice its weight!

I'm also curious about the new Samyang 45/1.8. It could replace my 50/1.4 ZA but I'm not counting on it.

that's just so far off my radar, the 35 f1.4 has been filler until a 35 f2 arrives, which is nowhere to be seen... if I get back to a fast 50, I'm ok with the SY 50 f1.4 with the latest firmware, worked ok for my needs. I like the size of that much better than the 35, and IQ seems comparable on my 24mp cam. I like the general look of the images when I had it, but prefer the nifty fifty more, just a million times faster on the A9.

What body are you using? And is this new with v4 or were you getting misses on earlier firmware too?

For reference, I've found mine to perform spectacularly on v3 with the A7III... very close to my Zony 55mm f1.8.

Focus is fast (although noisy) but it misses too much. Not what I want in an AF lens. I'm using it on the A7RIII.

Dang mine comes tomorrow. I m still trying to get healthy kids. I’m a little frustrated trying to get well again. Hoping to get going here. I bought both the 2.8 and 1.4 35mm.

Seems that the consensus on this lens' AF is still not there.
It is for sure an optical bargain at the price it is being sold, but definitely AF reliability looks not to be one of its strengths.
That there could be a material difference on how it performs on the A7III vs A7RIII is interesting though, worth to be investigated further if possible.

For now not regretting having shelled out more for the Zony, may not be as sharp (although is no slouch), but at least AF works as intended..
