p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mating alligators and a few birds.

Finally getting out to learn how to use the 200-500 and figured out that it doesn't have as much reach as I thought it did. These were maybe 100-150 feet away on a ball head which doesn't seem ideal to capture wildlife. All were cropped and the image quality really doesn't hold up more than likely due to my lack of experience with long lenses.

First noticed this guy looking for snack.

Out of the corner of my eye appeared the first alligator.

The alligator seemed to creep forward with the bird paying close attention.

Ants were appearing from time to time to bite at my feet while missing a good photo of the bird escaping.

Beginning courtship

Climbing aboard.

and then looking for privacy.

However, these birds were not happy with their location

I sometimes handhold my 600mm f4, but always brace my upper body and arm against something solid, like a rock, tree-trunk, non-vibrating vehicle, or railing. I also use an extra high shutter speed. But the truth is, this doesn't work very well unless you're extra strong and steady. You're better off using a sturdy tripod or bean-bag resting on something solid. In the old days, a bunch of us also used those gadgets that look like gun-stocks that we could brace against a shoulder or chest. The good choice for steadiness and quick response is a very solid tripod with a gimbal head.
