"Just lie flat in the grass". That's what my guide told me. So we're both lying in the grass snapping happily away. Then four rhinoceros got curious about what was in the grass. Four! They drifted our direction. They kept coming. And coming. Finally I got a bit nervous and asked my guide if we should move back and give them some space. "No!! Don't move!!" he whispered strongly. "Keep shooting.... but DON'T MOVE!"

After they left and it was safe to stand up, my guide turned to me with the biggest grin you ever saw, looked straight at me with bug eyes, and pronounced.... "WOW... that was special!!!"

That was an understatement

Thanks Fred. It was a little bit scary. But they did not exhibit any aggression at all. At their closest we were actually shooting up at them.

Where in the heck were you? I was on safari in Kenya, & we weren't allowed out of the vehicle!

Yup, rhino on foot is special...rhino on your belly is even more so. What a great experience!

Thanks Louie! I was half frantic trying to gently squeeze off shots without moving too much while keeping my belly and head on the ground, while still trying to keep awareness around and behind me.

My guide told me afterwards that he would not have let a group lie down in the grass outside the vehicle like that; that it's to uncontrollable. Luckily it was just the two of us.

Thanks Eric! That few minutes was one of the highlights of my trip (there were a few others too

), and something I'll never forget. I've been lucky to see one or two rhino a few different times on safari (both black and white), but never have they come even remotely this close, let alone being on the ground when a group of four did!!

Wow, what an experience that must have been. I just got back from Tanzania where we saw Black Rino's but from quite a distance, they are magnificent great creatures, but huge.
